The Los Angeles Chargers have officially signed offensive guard Kayode Awosika, adding a seasoned veteran to their offensive line. Awosika joins the team after four productive seasons with the Detroit Lions, bringing valuable experience to the Chargers’ front unit.
Awosika, pronounced KY-oh-dee ah-woah-SHE-kah, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. He spent one year in Philadelphia before moving to Detroit, where he played in 50 regular-season games and made 11 starts. His time with the Lions also included participation in four postseason contests, starting in one.
During his tenure in Detroit, Awosika played a key role in protecting quarterback Jared Goff and opening lanes for the running game. The Lions’ offensive line, including Awosika, supported three different 1,000-yard rushers and enabled Goff to throw for over 4,000 yards in each of the last four seasons. This track record underscores Awosika’s capabilities in both pass protection and run blocking.
Awosika’s football journey began at the University at Buffalo, where he redshirted in 2017. He then started 32 of 37 games over the next three seasons, earning accolades for his performance. In 2020, he received first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors while helping Buffalo achieve the second-ranked rushing offense nationally, averaging 287.4 rushing yards per game.
His success at Buffalo continued with a second-team All-MAC selection in 2019, the same year the Bulls set a program record with 3,256 rushing yards. Additionally, Awosika demonstrated versatility and durability by starting 14 games as a sophomore right tackle in 2018, contributing to a school record of 36 rushing touchdowns.
The signing of Kayode Awosika adds depth and experience to the Chargers’ offensive line. With his proven track record in protecting high-caliber quarterbacks and facilitating strong rushing attacks, Awosika is expected to bolster Los Angeles’ offensive front. His blend of experience at the professional and collegiate levels provides the Chargers with a reliable option as they prepare for the upcoming seasons.
