John Hannah Rejoins Brendan Fraser In The Mummy Revival, Universal Brings Back The Original Family

Universal Pictures is bringing back another familiar face for the next The Mummy film, with John Hannah set to reunite with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The new installment will continue the studio’s horror-adventure franchise and marks a major return for one of the original movies’ most recognizable supporting characters.

The project will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo behind the recent Scream revival and Ready or Not. David Coggeshall, known for The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill, is writing the screenplay.

A familiar cast member returns

Hannah appeared in all three earlier Mummy movies alongside Fraser, while Weisz returned for the first two parts. In the original 1999 film, Fraser played treasure hunter Rick O’Connell, who travels to Egypt in the 1920s with Evelyn, the librarian portrayed by Weisz, before accidentally awakening an ancient high priest.

Hannah played Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan Carnahan, a thief who often found a way to benefit from the chaos around him. His character became a fan favorite because he mixed comic timing with opportunistic survival, even as the franchise expanded into larger action and supernatural territory.

What is known about the new film

Plot details remain under wraps, and Universal has not revealed the story direction for the next chapter. The studio will release the film on May 19, 2028, and sources say production is expected to begin in the fall in London and Morocco.

The return also brings together a team with recent franchise experience. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett helped revive Scream with Scream and Scream VI, while Project X Entertainment is again involved through producers William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein.

Universal is also planning a theatrical rerelease of The Mummy Returns on March 27, 2026, to mark the film’s 25th anniversary. The move will keep the franchise in the spotlight while the new sequel moves toward production.

Hannah’s return adds another link to the original trilogy, and his presence signals that Universal is leaning into the legacy appeal that helped make The Mummy a durable action-horror property. The actor’s later screen credits include Four Weddings and a Funeral, Spartacus, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Last of Us and Black Mirror.
