Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has been handed a one-game suspension after he was assessed his 16th technical foul in Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets, the NBA said. He will miss Monday’s game against the Washington Wizards and can return Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers if no further discipline changes his status.
What led to the suspension
Doncic and Nets forward Ziaire Williams were given double technical fouls with 5:12 left in the third quarter after a physical exchange following an offensive foul on Doncic. A video review showed Doncic pushing Williams, while Williams responded by swiping at Doncic’s face, and crew chief Sean Wright issued the technicals after the review.
The penalty arrives after a recent technical-foul scare that briefly put Doncic on the edge of suspension. Last weekend, he picked up what was believed to be his 16th technical in a confrontation with Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze, but the NBA rescinded those technicals after the Lakers appealed.
How the NBA penalty works
NBA rules trigger an automatic one-game suspension when a player reaches 16 technical fouls in the regular season. After that point, each additional two technicals brings another automatic one-game ban.
- 16 technical fouls: one-game suspension
- 18 technical fouls: another one-game suspension
- 20 technical fouls: another one-game suspension
The league also increases the financial punishment as the total rises, making discipline more costly as the season moves toward the playoffs.
Financial impact for Doncic
The suspension will cost Doncic 1/174 of his annual salary, which is about $264,000. If he reaches the next suspension threshold, the deduction rises to 1/145 of his salary, or roughly $317,000.
That cost arrives during a strong scoring run for the Lakers star. Over his past 12 games, Doncic has averaged 39.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.5 steals, underlining how important his availability is for Los Angeles.
What it means for the Lakers
The Lakers will have to play one game without their leading offensive engine at a key point in the schedule. By the time Doncic is eligible to return, the team will have seven regular-season games left, leaving little margin for further disciplinary setbacks or roster disruptions.
The suspension also adds another layer of pressure in a crowded Western Conference race, where every late-season game can affect playoff positioning. For Los Angeles, Doncic’s return against Cleveland would come just as the team tries to preserve momentum while managing the risk of more technical fouls before the regular season ends.
