LeBron James will not play when the Los Angeles Lakers face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night because of soreness in his left foot, the team announced. The absence comes as the Lakers manage his workload during the final stretch of the regular season and a demanding schedule with three games in four nights.
James, 41, has dealt with discomfort in the same foot for much of the season. He logged 39 minutes in Sunday’s 134-128 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, finishing with 30 points, 15 assists and nine rebounds as Los Angeles played its first game after Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were sidelined with significant injuries.
Lakers face tight schedule and limited margin for error
The matchup with Oklahoma City begins a difficult run for Los Angeles, which also has a road back-to-back against the Golden State Warriors and a home game against the Phoenix Suns. James’ absence gives the coaching staff a chance to protect him before the club enters another compressed stretch.
The Lakers are trying to hold their position near the top of the Western Conference with four games left in the regular season. They sit in fourth place and trail the Denver Nuggets by half a game, while holding the tiebreaker over Denver.
Injuries continue to test Los Angeles
Marcus Smart will also miss the game against the Thunder, extending his absence to eight straight games because of a right ankle contusion. With multiple rotation players out, the Lakers will have to lean on their remaining healthy core to stay competitive against one of the league’s strongest teams.
The Thunder have already beaten the Lakers three times this season, including a 139-96 win in Oklahoma City last Thursday. That record adds more pressure on Los Angeles as it tries to limit further damage while navigating James’ foot issues and the physical demands of the final week of the schedule.
What the Lakers are managing
- LeBron James is out because of left foot soreness.
- Marcus Smart remains sidelined with a right ankle contusion.
- The Lakers play three games in four nights.
- Los Angeles is fourth in the West with four regular-season games remaining.
- Oklahoma City has won all three meetings with the Lakers this season.
James’ status will remain a key storyline as the Lakers move through the season’s final games, especially with the playoff race still tight and the team trying to keep him available for the stretch that matters most.
