Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot and Claude Code service suffered a major outage that disrupted access for many users on Tuesday morning. The company later said the problem was fixed after roughly 90 minutes, with service success rates returning to normal.
Anthropic’s status page labeled the incident as a “major outage” affecting the Claude website and Claude Code. At the same time, Claude Cowork and the Claude API were still listed as operational, while thousands of reports also appeared on the outage-tracking site DownDetector.
What Anthropic said
Anthropic said the issue was resolved after engineers applied a fix. “We have applied a fix and success rates have returned to normal,” the company posted on its status dashboard, adding that it was still monitoring the system closely to prevent any further problems.
The outage arrived during a period of strong interest in Claude. Downloads of the Claude app briefly passed ChatGPT in Apple’s App Store early in March, showing how quickly demand for the chatbot has grown.
Recent service problems
This was not an isolated incident for Claude. Users reported access problems on Monday as well, and Anthropic’s status dashboard has shown several issues in recent weeks.
- Claude website: major outage during the incident
- Claude Code: major outage during the incident
- Claude Cowork: operational
- Claude API: operational
The pattern adds pressure on Anthropic as more users rely on Claude for everyday chat, coding, and workplace tasks. Frequent disruptions can matter more when a service is used as a core productivity tool rather than a casual consumer app.
Why the outage matters
Claude Code has become especially important for developers using AI to help write and review software. When that service goes down, even briefly, the impact can spread quickly across teams that depend on it for daily work.
The incident also highlights the challenge of scaling fast-growing AI products. Rising traffic can expose weakness in infrastructure, and even short outages can affect user trust at a time when competition in the AI chatbot market remains intense.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment on the outage. The company’s dashboard remained the main source of public updates as it continued to monitor the service after the fix was applied.
