The New Jersey Devils have named Sunny Mehta as the franchise’s sixth general manager, giving the club a new leader with deep NHL front-office experience and a history with the organization. The team said Mehta returns to New Jersey after six seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he helped guide hockey operations during a period that included back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.
Managing Partner David Blitzer said the Devils see Mehta’s familiarity with the organization and experience with a championship-caliber team as key assets for the next phase. He added that the club expects to become a regular playoff team and compete for the Stanley Cup, while Mehta said the role is a “dream come true” for a New Jersey native who grew up near the team’s practice facility in Totowa.
A familiar face returns to New Jersey
Mehta is not new to the Devils’ ecosystem. He previously worked in the organization from the first wave of NHL analytics hires, joining in 2014 as Director of Hockey Analytics and helping establish the league’s first full-time analytics department.
That role placed him in the room for scouting, draft preparation, and player evaluation, as the Devils began to expand data-driven decision-making. He spent four seasons in New Jersey before later working with the Washington Capitals as a consultant and spending time with the Phoenix Coyotes earlier in his career.

The Panthers’ recent success gives Mehta a strong championship pedigree as he steps into a leadership role in New Jersey. Florida became only the fourth NHL team in the last 30 years to win consecutive titles, and Mehta was part of that management group during the run.
A career built on analytics and a wide skill set
Mehta’s path to NHL management has been unusually diverse. He studied jazz guitar and studio at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, later earned a master’s degree in data science from City University of New York, and also worked as a professional musician and poker player.
He later co-authored two poker strategy books and worked as a proprietary derivatives trader at Peak6 Capital Management at the Chicago Board of Trade. That mix of analytical work, performance under pressure, and strategic thinking has long shaped his reputation in hockey circles.
Local roots and organizational ties
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, Mehta also has a clear personal connection to the region and the franchise. He played varsity hockey at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes and returned to Ramapo with the Stanley Cup in June of 2024 alongside his wife, Nicole.
The Devils said Mehta’s appointment comes after a broad search that drew multiple qualified candidates. His return signals a leadership shift for a team that believes it has a young core, draft capital, and enough long-term potential to build toward sustained contention.
