Donnie Wahlberg has shared a rare update about Tom Selleck’s response to Boston Blue, the Blue Bloods spinoff built around Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. Speaking at CBS Fest, Wahlberg said Selleck backed the new series and left the door open for a future reunion on screen.
“Tom supported me doing this,” Wahlberg told Us Weekly, adding that a return for Frank Reagan could still happen “when the time is right.” He also said the decision would depend on timing, the situation, and the script, while making clear that having Selleck involved would be welcome.
Selleck’s possible return remains open
Wahlberg did not confirm any immediate plans for Selleck to appear, but he suggested the role could still come back if the story fits. He noted that Selleck “may want to play” Frank again, though that choice would depend on how the show develops.
The actor also pointed to the franchise’s history of bringing back familiar faces. According to Wahlberg, other Blue Bloods cast members have already appeared on Boston Blue, including Grandpa Reagan, and more Reagan family moments are expected before the season ends.
Why Frank Reagan still matters to the franchise
Selleck played Frank Reagan, the New York City police commissioner and Reagan family patriarch, across 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, which began in 2010. The family core of the series also included Henry Reagan, played by Len Cariou, along with Erin Reagan, Danny Reagan, and Jamie Reagan, portrayed by Bridget Moynahan, Wahlberg, and Will Estes.
That long-running family structure helped make the show a staple for CBS viewers, and it also explains why any potential Frank appearance on Boston Blue carries added weight. Wahlberg said it would be “lovely” to have Selleck back, but stressed that the right timing matters most.
Blue Bloods ended with lingering frustration
The discussion around Boston Blue comes after Blue Bloods wrapped following years of speculation about its future. In 2023, the cast and producers agreed to a 25 percent pay cut as the series was renewed, but the show later came to an official end.
Selleck later spoke publicly about that decision, saying he felt frustrated that the series was not given more credit for its performance. He argued that Blue Bloods had been successful from the start and said it had been treated as if its value was taken for granted.
He also said the ending took time to process, describing how the routine of filming was suddenly gone. “There was no Monday,” he said, after realizing the production schedule had ended for good.
Selleck’s own view on a future appearance
Ahead of the series finale, Selleck said he was unsure what his next job would be, though he mentioned interest in a Western or the right kind of comedy. When asked about Boston Blue, he said he was open to the idea but that nobody had asked him.
“I love Frank Reagan,” Selleck said, while adding that he did not see the character retiring or simply disappearing. Boston Blue continues on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET, and Wahlberg’s comments suggest that any eventual Frank Reagan appearance would depend on story, scheduling, and the right creative fit.
