The spring high school championship stretch is already underway, with May packed with playoff games and title events across multiple sports. Baseball, softball, track and field, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming, golf, tennis, and stunt cheer all have key section finals scheduled through the month.
The schedule gives teams across the Southern Section and City Section a clear postseason path. Several of the biggest venue names on the calendar include Dodger Stadium, Cal State Fullerton, Mt. San Antonio College, and Birmingham.
Baseball brings marquee venues and late-May title games
Baseball headlines the championship slate with the City Section Open Division and Division I finals set for Dodger Stadium on Saturday, May 23. In the Southern Section, Division 1 will crown its champion at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, May 29.
Other Southern Section baseball finals are scheduled for May 30 at Epicenter Stadium in Rancho Cucamonga. The split sites reflect the depth of the postseason field and the number of divisions still in play.
Softball closes out the month
Softball title games are spread across the final week of May. The Southern Section finals will be held May 28-30 at Barber Park in Irvine, while the City Section finals are set for May 29-30 at a site to be announced.
That late-month timing keeps softball among the last major spring championships to settle. It also gives contenders a longer runway after league play and early rounds of the postseason.
Track, field, and distance events move quickly
Track and field reaches its section finals earlier than many other spring sports. The Southern Section finals are set for Saturday, May 16, at Moorpark High, followed by the Masters Meet on May 23.
The City Section finals are scheduled for Thursday, May 21, at Birmingham. That setup places the major track meets close together, with qualifiers moving through the postseason in a short window.
Volleyball, cheer, and beach action fill the early slate
Boys’ volleyball also takes center stage in mid-May. The Southern Section finals run May 14-16 at Cerritos College, while the City Section finals are split between Venice on Friday, May 15, and Birmingham on Saturday, May 16.
Girls’ beach volleyball and stunt cheer arrive even earlier on the calendar. The Southern Section girls’ beach volleyball finals are set for May 2 at Long Beach City College, and the City Section team final is May 1 at Santa Monica Beach.
Stunt cheer in the City Section is scheduled for Friday, May 1, at Venice. The early placement of those events helps kick off the spring championship period before the larger team sports begin their final rounds.
Lacrosse, swimming, golf, and tennis round out the calendar
Lacrosse finals are also clustered in a tight postseason window. The Southern Section finals are May 15-16 at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange, while the City Section finals are Thursday, April 30, at Palisades.
Swimming follows with Southern Section finals from May 5-9 at Mt. San Antonio College and City Section finals on Friday, May 8, at East L.A. College. Boys’ golf, meanwhile, features a Southern Section individual final on Thursday, May 21, with team finals held May 18-19.
The City Section boys’ golf finals are set for Wednesday, May 20, at Wilson/Harding. Boys’ tennis closes out another busy part of the spring schedule, with Southern Section finals on Friday, May 15, at University of Redlands Claremont Club and City Section finals on April 29 and May 6-7 at Balboa Park.
