The latest look at God of War Laufey has made one thing clear: Santa Monica Studio is pushing the series into a very different kind of adventure. The new gameplay footage, shown during PlayStation State of Play June 2026, puts Faye at the center and gives her a style that feels faster, sharper, and far more agile than Kratos.
The clip runs for more than 20 minutes and has already drawn major attention online. It reportedly reached 2.8 million views in less than 24 hours and landed among YouTube’s Gaming trends on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
A different lead character, a different tone
This new entry does not place Kratos in the spotlight as the main focus. Instead, Santa Monica Studio shifts the story toward Faye, also known as Laufey, the Jötunn warrior and Kratos’ wife.
The studio frames that change as more than a simple character swap. In its official wording, death is not the end for Laufey, and “a new adventure has just begun” for her.
Faye wakes unexpectedly in Everywhen, a mysterious afterlife where gods from different mythologies clash for power. From there, her mission becomes urgent and personal, as she must move quickly to protect Kratos and Atreus from growing threats.
Everywhen broadens the world
The setting of Everywhen gives the series room to expand beyond its familiar conflicts. It is not just a backdrop for one more battle, but a place where mythologies overlap and the struggle for control becomes much larger.
Odin remains an important force in the story as well. Santa Monica Studio says he is haunted by a prophecy about his death during Ragnarök and is obsessed with finding knowledge about something beyond the human afterlife.
That wider mythological scope is reinforced by the appearance of gods from other traditions, including Sekhmet from Egypt and Begtse from Buddhism. Their presence suggests that Faye’s journey is not only about family survival, but also about a much bigger cosmic conflict.
Faye’s combat stands apart from Kratos
The most striking shift in the gameplay is Faye’s fighting style. Where Kratos is known for heavy, forceful attacks, Faye moves with high mobility and strings together faster combos.
The footage shows her transitioning smoothly from ground attacks into aerial sequences. Her pace is so aggressive that it has been compared to Devil May Cry, thanks to the speed and fluidity of the combat.

Santa Monica Studio says the difference is intentional. The team notes that both Faye and Kratos can deliver powerful attacks and absorb heavy punishment, but it wanted Faye’s gameplay to feel unique and fresh.

God of War Laufey is being positioned as a PS5 exclusive with a design approach that is described as fresher, faster, and brutal. The move to a new protagonist gives the developers room to explore a different style without losing the intensity associated with the series.
That also places Faye in a more central role within the franchise’s world. By telling the story from her perspective, the game broadens the emotional focus while keeping family protection at the heart of the plot.
