Microsoft’s next Surface Pro refresh appears to be shaping up around two priorities that rarely arrive together in a tablet PC: higher efficiency and stronger sustained performance. The Surface Pro 12 is being positioned to last up to 15.5 hours, a figure that would put it more than 10 percent ahead of the previous model.
That battery claim is tied to a broader shift in Microsoft’s Surface strategy. The company is still keeping an x86 version in the lineup, but the ARM-based direction is becoming more prominent, and Snapdragon X2 is emerging as the main attention point for the new model.
Snapdragon X2 takes the spotlight
Promotional material that has surfaced points to the Surface Pro 12 using Snapdragon X2 Elite. So far, however, only a 12-core variant has been seen, which may correspond to the X2E-78-100, X2E-80-100, or X2E-84-100.
There is also a possibility that the consumer version of the Surface Pro 12 could begin with Snapdragon X2 Plus instead. That would suggest Microsoft is reserving the higher-tier chip as an option rather than making it the only configuration available.
More memory, removable storage
The configuration choices do not stop at the processor. The Surface Pro 12 is said to go up to 32 GB of RAM, which should help it handle heavier productivity work alongside everyday use.
Storage options are listed at 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB, all using removable PCIe Gen 4 storage. That detail keeps the Surface Pro line aligned with one of its more practical characteristics, since removable storage can make servicing and upgrades more appealing for certain users.
OLED display remains in place
Microsoft is also expected to keep the 13-inch OLED display on the Surface Pro 12. That matters because the OLED panel has already been one of the standout elements in the Surface Pro lineup.
Battery life remains one of the clearest claims around the new model. Microsoft says the device can reach up to 15.5 hours, which marks an improvement of about 10 percent over the older version.
For context, the Surface Pro 11 OLED previously recorded more than 11 hours in Wi-Fi testing with the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100. In H.264 video playback testing, the same device lasted 15.9 hours.
Design details and accessories
On the design side, the ARM-based Surface Pro 12 is reported to arrive in a Dune finish. That option would sit alongside the Black and Platinum colors already found in Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Microsoft is also preparing the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard for the device. Pricing for the Surface Pro 12 has not been revealed yet, so the final positioning is still incomplete.
Even without a price, the current picture suggests a meaningful update for Microsoft’s tablet-PC hybrid. Snapdragon X2, up to 32 GB of RAM, removable PCIe Gen 4 storage, a 13-inch OLED panel, and a longer battery claim all point to a more ambitious Surface Pro release.
