Apple used WWDC 2026 to send two messages at once: Siri is getting a major AI upgrade, and Tim Cook is nearing the end of his run as CEO. The event made clear that Apple wants to answer long-standing criticism about its position in artificial intelligence while also preparing for a leadership handover.
The new Siri AI is positioned as the company’s main tool in that effort. Apple said the updated assistant will connect across its products and apps, while also working alongside a new app described as similar to AI assistant services from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Apple’s pitch for a smarter Siri
Apple says the new Siri AI will be more aware of context in conversation. It draws on a user’s interaction history, image understanding, and broader world knowledge to deliver responses that are more relevant.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, framed the update as part of Apple’s broader philosophy on AI. He said, “AI that truly helps has to be centered on you and your needs,” and stressed privacy “at every step.”
That privacy message remains central to how Apple wants this new phase to be understood. The company is not just trying to show better technical performance, but also preserve its identity as a provider of devices and services that put user data protection first.
A test of Apple’s AI reputation
Even with the new announcement, Apple still faces pressure to prove that its approach works outside the stage presentation. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said Apple needs to show that the promised privacy and integration actually translate into a better user experience.
Wood also noted that WWDC this time offered some answers to Apple’s shortcomings in AI. The bigger challenge, however, is still real-world use rather than presentation-day messaging.
Apple said the Siri AI beta will arrive later this year. The service will not be available in the European Union because of local regulatory constraints.
Google partnership adds another layer
Apple also highlighted a partnership with Google as part of its AI foundation work. That collaboration will be used to launch Apple Foundation Models based on Gemini and Google cloud technology.
The move shows that Apple is not relying only on internal development. It is also combining forces with a major partner to speed up the base of its AI strategy.
Safety changes and outside pressure
Beyond AI, Apple also pointed to trust and safety updates in iOS 27. The main focus is child protection on Apple devices.
Parental controls will be expanded so that approval is required before children can communicate with strangers. The system will also automatically censor sexually explicit or violent images sent to a child’s device.
Those changes have not fully eased criticism from advocacy groups. Child safety remains a major pressure point for big technology companies, including Apple.
Outside Apple Park, several child safety activists voiced their objections. Sarah Gardner of the HEAT Initiative even chained herself to a tree in protest, demanding that Apple remove “nudification” technology from the App Store and clear child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, from iCloud.
Cook’s final major stage as CEO
Amid all the product news, attention also turned to Tim Cook. The WWDC 2026 keynote was his last major appearance as CEO before he steps down in September.
Cook will be replaced by John Ternus, who attended the event but did not speak during Monday morning’s main session. The transition marks a new chapter for Apple after 15 years under Cook’s leadership.
The closing moments of the event turned emotional as thousands of employees and developers gave a standing ovation. Cook described his role at Apple as “the honor of a lifetime” and told the audience, “Your imagination and creativity have inspired me for the last 15 years.”
WWDC 2026 therefore carried more than one defining moment for Apple. It was a public push to show that Siri AI can help close the company’s AI gap, and at the same time a farewell to the executive who led Apple through a 15-year era.
