Windows 11’s right-click menu is heading toward a more flexible design, and that may matter more than it first sounds. Microsoft is preparing controls that would let users add, remove, and rearrange context menu items, turning one of the most frequently used parts of the system into something far easier to tailor.
The change is aimed at a familiar frustration. The context menu is used constantly in File Explorer and elsewhere in Windows, but its long list of entries has often made simple actions feel slower than they should be.
Microsoft moves toward user-controlled context menus
Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows and Devices at Microsoft, confirmed the plan in a post on Twitter. He said the company wants to open up customization options for the right-click menu in Windows 11.
That direction points to a much cleaner default menu. Instead of presenting users with a crowded list as soon as they right-click, Microsoft wants the starting layout to feel more direct and less overloaded.
Why the change matters in daily use
A cluttered context menu affects more than appearance. When too many items are stacked together, important commands become harder to spot, and routine tasks such as opening, renaming, or sharing files can take longer than expected.
Reordering items could make the menu more practical for people who rely on the same commands every day. Frequently used options could be moved into easier reach, while less important ones would no longer force users to scan through a long list first.
The ability to remove items is also significant. It would help reduce the problem of menus filled with entries that are rarely used, making the interface better reflect individual habits.
Part of a wider Windows 11 effort
This context menu change is not an isolated update. It sits within Microsoft’s internal K2 strategy, which is focused on improving the Windows 11 experience.
Several K2-related updates are already making their way into the operating system. Microsoft is also preparing visual refreshes for older features such as Control Panel and Device Manager, along with a long-requested return of the vertical Taskbar.
The company is also working on Start Menu improvements and other refinements designed to make Windows 11 feel more practical overall. In that context, the right-click menu overhaul may be small in size but large in impact.

Microsoft has not said exactly when the changes will arrive for Windows 11 users. The company has only said the update is part of a wave of changes expected over the coming months.
