ANBERNIC’s RG557 is finally receiving a major software update that changes how the handheld is used day to day. Firmware V1.28 introduces a more unified interface, faster access to system controls, and a gaming-focused layout that reduces the need to spend time inside standard Android menus.
The update matters because Android-based gaming handhelds often leave users stuck between a generic mobile launcher and a separate frontend setup. On the RG557, ANBERNIC is now trying to close that gap with tools that make the device feel more like a dedicated handheld and less like a phone in a shell.
RG Home brings games and apps into one place
The biggest change is the addition of RG Home, a unified gaming frontend that combines Android apps and retro emulation access in one interface. ANBERNIC designed it with controller-friendly navigation and a modern layout meant to be easier to use than the usual Android home screen.
One of its notable details is the use of two virtual dials that help users sort games by platform and genre. ANBERNIC has also mapped the launcher to a dedicated physical button on the device, giving users a quicker way to jump straight into the library.
The company also added account integration for cloud syncing across devices. That sync support covers favorite games and play history, which can help keep the experience consistent across compatible devices in the same ecosystem.
A faster route to settings and performance controls
ANBERNIC is also adding RG Control Center, a new overlay that opens with a quick swipe from the screen edge. It brings together several practical tools that handheld users typically need while playing, including performance monitoring, quick settings, controller mapping, and device configuration.
That approach reduces the need to leave a game and dig through Android’s default Settings app whenever something needs adjusting. For a gaming handheld, that is a meaningful improvement because system changes often happen in the middle of play rather than during setup.
Button mapping is now more flexible
The update also revises the RG Button Mapping software. For Android games that rely on touchscreen input, the screen-mapping utility now supports multiple saved custom controller profiles.
That feature gives players more flexibility when switching between games that need different control layouts. Instead of rebuilding the mapping every time, users can move between saved profiles and keep gameplay interruptions to a minimum.
Hotfixes no longer depend on full system flashes
ANBERNIC has also separated the new software layer from the core system, allowing the frontend and control center to receive independent hotfixes through a new self-updating module. In practice, this means smaller fixes and feature tweaks can arrive without requiring a full system flash.
For users, that should make maintenance lighter and updates faster to deliver. It also suggests a more modular software strategy for a device class that often needs quick adjustments after launch.
OTA rollout is already underway
Firmware V1.28 is now rolling out over OTA for global RG557 units. Owners can receive the update directly on the device without doing a manual install.
ANBERNIC is also offering an official offline update package on its website for users who prefer manual flashing or have slower network access. With RG Home, RG Control Center, expanded button mapping, and modular hotfix support, the V1.28 update marks one of the most important software changes yet for the RG557.
