Instagram is giving users a new level of control over profile appearance by allowing photo and video posts to be moved into any position on the grid. The new edit grid feature removes the old dependence on upload order and gives creators more freedom to shape how a profile looks at first glance.
The update has been rolled out globally and arrives at a moment when many users have been asking for a cleaner way to manage their feeds. For creators and personal account holders alike, the feature makes it possible to build a profile that feels more organized, more thematic, and more visually consistent.
A long-requested feature finally arrives
Reordering the Instagram grid has been one of the most requested profile tools for years. A hidden “edit grid” option was reportedly spotted inside Instagram systems as early as 2022 by Alessandro Paluzzi, suggesting the feature had been in development for a long time before its public release.
Meta has now brought the feature to users after an extended testing and development process. The company said the delay was needed to make sure the system worked smoothly and avoided technical problems.
How the new grid controls work
The feature can be accessed directly from the main profile page. Users can press and hold a photo or video post, then choose “Reorder grid” from the menu that also includes options such as “Pin to main grid” and “Archive.”
Once selected, Instagram opens a dedicated editing window that shows the full profile content layout. From there, users can drag and drop each post into the position they want.
More freedom for a cleaner visual identity
With the new tool, the feed no longer has to follow the order in which posts were uploaded. Older content can be moved to the top instantly, making it easier to align the profile with a chosen color palette, theme, or overall visual composition.
That flexibility gives users a faster way to make a profile look more aesthetic without deleting old posts or uploading them again just to fix the grid.
One important limitation remains
There is still one rule that applies inside the edit grid menu. Posts that have already been pinned will remain locked in the top row and cannot be moved by other content.
Pinned posts also turn black inside the editing window as a visual marker that their position is fixed. That helps users distinguish between content that can be rearranged and content that must stay in place at the top of the profile.
