Valor Mortis may no longer be heading for its planned September release, as One More Level weighs whether the date still makes sense in an increasingly crowded market. The studio’s concern is not only about competing with other major titles, but also about avoiding the shadow cast by Grand Theft Auto VI.
The soulslike project, set in an alternate Napoleonic era, was previously scheduled to launch on 24 September 2026. That timing now looks far less secure after a wave of major announcements shifted September into one of the busiest months on the gaming calendar.
A release window that suddenly looks risky
September 2026 has become a difficult target because multiple high-profile games are already crowding the month. Following announcements from Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and State of Play, the calendar filled quickly with titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall, Dawn of War 4, Control Resonant, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
That concentration leaves little room for new releases to stand out. Studios now have to compete for attention from players, media outlets, and content creators who can only focus on so many launches at once.
One More Level is still deciding
In an interview after the Xbox Games Showcase, Valor Mortis Game Director Radosław Ratusznik said the previously announced release date was not fully final. He noted that a lot had changed in only a few days as other studios revealed their own plans.
Ratusznik said the team would think through its next move carefully over the coming days and expressed confidence that the game would find the right time to launch. For now, no official decision has locked in whether September will remain or whether the game will move elsewhere.
GTA 6 adds another layer of pressure
The other major factor is GTA 6, which Rockstar Games is scheduled to release on 19 November 2026. The game has already generated enormous anticipation, and that scale could reshape how players spend their time and money later in the year.
Many gamers are already expected to save for GTA 6, which could make the final months of 2026 especially challenging for other releases. For smaller and mid-sized titles alike, avoiding that period may be a safer commercial decision.
Valor Mortis still has a strong hook
Despite the uncertainty around its launch timing, Valor Mortis still stands out with a distinctive concept. It blends soulslike combat with an alternative Napoleonic setting, supernatural elements, monstrous enemies, and a dark horror atmosphere.
The first-person perspective also sets it apart from many other games in the genre. That approach makes each fight feel closer, harsher, and more tense than the third-person style commonly used in soulslike games.
With that mix of historical setting, horror tone, and unusual camera perspective, Valor Mortis remains one of the more intriguing new names in the genre. The challenge now is finding a release window where it can actually command attention rather than disappear into a packed season.
