A 21-year-old man in Lubuk Linggau ended his flight from the law in an unusual way: he surrendered to police after the money from his alleged theft was gone. Authorities say the decision closed the search for a burglary suspect who had fled after breaking into a resident’s home.
The suspect, identified as AB, is a resident of Petanang Ilir Village, Lubuk Linggau Utara I District. He turned himself in to police on Saturday, 20 June 2026, after the proceeds from the alleged crime were reportedly spent on daily needs during his time on the run.
House break-in reported after the victim returned home
The case began on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, at around 1:00 p.m., when Kandini found signs that the home in RT 01 of Petanang Ilir had been entered. One window was open wide, prompting immediate suspicion that the house had been broken into.
After checking inside, the victim discovered that two 3-kilogram gas cylinders and two mobile phones were missing. The devices were identified as an Oppo A74 and a Vivo Y21A.
The victim then filed a report with the Lubuk Linggau Utara Police Station, which became the basis for an investigation. Police examined the report, questioned witnesses, and secured remaining evidence for the case file.
Police say the suspect surrendered after spending the stolen money
According to Unit Head of Criminal Investigation at Lubuk Linggau Utara Police, Ipda Beny Kurniawan, AB fled after the alleged burglary and remained at large until police received information that he had turned himself in to personnel at Subsektor Selatan II. The criminal investigation team then picked him up and brought him to the Lubuk Linggau Utara I Police Station for further questioning.
Police said AB surrendered because the money from the theft had already run out. During the period he was on the run, the funds were reportedly used for everyday expenses.
The case drew attention not only because the suspect was not caught immediately, but also because police identified AB as a repeat offender in a child molestation case. That background has become part of the handling of the burglary investigation, although the process still rests on evidence and witness statements.
Charges and next legal steps
AB is being charged with aggravated theft under Law No. 1 of 2023, Article 477 of the Indonesian Criminal Code. Police say the legal process will continue based on the evidence collected and the examination carried out by investigators.
The items reported stolen remain two 3-kilogram gas cylinders and two phones, namely the Oppo A74 and Vivo Y21A. After being picked up from Subsektor Selatan II, AB was taken to Lubuk Linggau Utara I Police Station for continued investigation in connection with the burglary at the Petanang Ilir residence.
