Apple May Delay the Cheaper iPhone 18, Putting Pro and Ultra in Front

Apple appears to be preparing a major shift in how it launches the next iPhone lineup. Instead of putting every model on the same September stage, the company may use the event to spotlight its most expensive devices first.

The move would give Apple more time to keep attention on the premium segment, while pushing the more affordable iPhone 18 models into a later release window. For buyers, that could mean a longer wait for the standard version, even as Apple expands the range of iPhones it is willing to launch across different seasons.

Premium models could take center stage

According to supply chain information, Apple is expected to start mass production of the iPhone Ultra in July. That timing fits the company’s usual pattern of unveiling major new devices in September.

What makes this cycle unusual is the possibility that Apple will reserve the September launch mainly for the iPhone Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra. A supply chain executive cited in the report said the standard model in the current iPhone lineup could be delayed until the following spring.

Why Apple may be leaning harder on Pro sales

The strategy would build on the strong market momentum of Apple’s Pro line. The iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly reached the top five most popular phones last year, even though it sold in only about a quarter of the volume seen by other models.

Two other Pro models also made the same list, reinforcing the idea that Apple’s higher-end devices are now carrying a large share of the brand’s appeal. That gives Apple a clear reason to keep the spotlight on premium hardware for as long as possible.

What this could mean for iPhone 18

If this plan is carried out, the cheaper iPhone 18 could move to a spring launch instead of arriving alongside the rest of the family. That would allow Apple to stretch out the commercial impact of its premium phones and carry that momentum into 2026.

The result would be a more staggered release schedule than usual. Rather than one large iPhone launch window, Apple could spread its announcements across different parts of the year while still focusing first on the most expensive devices.

Ultra readiness and pricing pressure

The iPhone Ultra is positioned as a niche, high-priced device, and Apple is said to have ordered only 3 million display panels for the first batch from Samsung. At the same time, Samsung Display is reported to have met, and even exceeded, Apple’s yield-quality requirements for foldable panels.

That suggests two of the most important parts of final assembly are now ready. The hinge noise issue seen in durability testing is said to have come from overly tight assembly tolerances, and that problem has reportedly been resolved.

There is also a pricing question surrounding the Pro line. The latest rumor says the iPhone 18 Pro could be priced as high as $1,399 to help offset rising chip costs.

If Apple limits the early launch window to Pro and Ultra models, it could protect margins while still drawing in early buyers. The competitive backdrop is also getting tougher, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 currently listed at $1,485 in Amazon Prime Day offers.

For now, the clearest signal is that Apple may be moving toward a more flexible iPhone launch calendar. If that happens, September would belong to Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra, while the more affordable iPhone 18 would wait for spring.
