BINUS Pushes AI Beyond Tools, Aims to Shape Value, Policy, and Human Impact

BINUS University is pushing a broader view of artificial intelligence through its AI for Life initiative, positioning AI as a force that can improve daily life, raise productivity, and support national resilience. The message is not about using AI as a convenient tool, but about turning it into something that creates real value for people and institutions.

The approach matters because AI adoption often stops at tool usage. BINUS is instead framing AI as a cross-disciplinary priority that must be applied ethically, with outcomes that reach beyond efficiency and into society at large.

Three strategic pillars

The AI for Life concept is built around three core areas of focus. Together, they map a path for Indonesia’s technology future from the technical layer to business application and policy response.

Focus AreaMain EmphasisKey Issues
AI TransformationTechnology, engineering, and ITData infrastructure, privacy protection, ethics, digital talent readiness
Business and Creative IndustryAI as a strategic partnerFaster idea development, competitiveness, efficiency, human taste and social sensitivity
Geopolitics, Law, and National PolicyPublic-interest safeguardsData sovereignty, cyber security, asymmetric threats, responsive regulation

The first pillar focuses on AI Transformation in technology, engineering, and IT. BINUS emphasizes a shift from being users of AI to becoming creators of economic and social value, while also highlighting the need for data infrastructure, privacy protection, ethical standards, and prepared digital talent.

The second pillar links AI with business and the creative sector. In this area, AI is presented as a strategic partner that can speed up idea development and strengthen competitiveness and efficiency, while still leaving room for human judgment, cultural sensitivity, and creativity.

The third pillar moves into geopolitics, law, and national policy. Here, the university highlights the importance of data sovereignty, cybersecurity, mitigation of asymmetric warfare, and regulatory frameworks that can protect the public interest without slowing innovation.

A milestone tied to 45 years of BINUS

The initiative also comes as BINUS University marks 45 years in education. That anniversary is being used to underline its ambition to help lead digital transformation at both the national and regional levels.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Harjanto Prabowo, M.M., Chairman of the BINUS University Board of Professors, said technology should be placed in service of human life. He stressed that AI for Life is intended to ensure AI supports people rather than replaces them.

Indonesia on a global stage

The vision extends beyond campus through BINUS University’s role as host of the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2026. The international forum will bring Indonesia’s higher education and technology conversation to a wider global audience.

The event, themed Advancing Education for Purpose and Impact, is scheduled for 3–5 November 2026 at the Bali International Convention Centre. More than 1,000 delegates from across countries are expected to attend, including university leaders, government regulators, and technology industry players.

The forum will also amplify the scientific address titled Shaping the Next Intelligence Era: Artificial Intelligence, Leadership, and Collaboration. That platform is expected to place Indonesia in the middle of a serious conversation about the future of AI.

What the appointment signals for higher education

BINUS’s appointment as host is seen as a sign that Indonesia’s higher education ecosystem is ready for a larger role. With 45 years of experience and a clear focus on practical technological impact, the university is positioned to connect local strengths with global dialogue.

Stephen Wahyudi Santoso, President of BINUS Higher Education, said the opportunity is not only a milestone for BINUS. He described it as a chance to show the world that Indonesia has a higher education ecosystem that is growing, adaptive, technology-driven, and ready for global collaboration.

Through AI for Life, BINUS is making a wider argument about where the technology race should lead. The central aim is not just faster innovation, but a future in which AI helps build a society that is more human, productive, and competitive.
