Pause Google Activity Tracking to Limit New Search, Location and YouTube Records

Google account settings can be used to stop new activity from being saved automatically. The option offers a way to reduce a digital trail while continuing to use Google services.

Searches, app usage, watched YouTube videos and visited locations may contribute to information held in an account. That information can help Google understand user interests and personalize services and advertising.

The Main Setting to Review

The key control is Web & App Activity, which covers search activity and app use. Pausing it stops new activity from being automatically stored under that setting.

Users can open Google.com in a desktop or mobile browser and sign in to their Google account. They can then select Manage your Google Account to reach the account settings centre.

From there, users can open Privacy & Personalization and select the data and personalization management option. The Activity Controls section contains the setting for Web & App Activity.

Turning the switch off prompts a confirmation window. Selecting Pause prevents future activity from being saved through that control.

Pausing the setting does not erase information that has already been stored. Existing records must be reviewed and managed separately.

What May Remain in an Account

Account information may include a name, gender, date of birth, phone number and home address. Search history, visited websites, interests, workplace information and watched videos may also be part of the stored data.

Google collects information from services including Gmail, Search, Android devices and YouTube. The data is used to understand preferences and support the services being used.

CNBC Indonesia noted that personalised advertising categories can be reviewed through Manage Ads Settings. That page may show estimated age, gender, advertising topics considered relevant and advertisements that have been blocked.

Location and YouTube Records

Google Location History, connected with Google Maps, can retain records of places a user has visited. The setting allows users to review locations that have been recorded.

YouTube activity can also include search terms and videos that were watched. These records are available through the Search and YouTube Watch History settings.

Account activity controls are separate from browsing history stored on a device. Clearing browser data requires a separate action in each browser.

How Browser History Can Be Cleared

BrowserMain menuAction
Google ChromeSettings > Privacy & SecuritySelect Clear browsing data, choose a time range, then clear the data.
Mozilla FirefoxSettings > Privacy & SecurityOpen Cookies & Site Data to remove data or set automatic deletion when the browser closes.
SafariClear HistorySelect a time period and clear the history.
Microsoft EdgeSettings > PrivacySelect Clear browsing data, choose what to clear, then select Clear Now.
OperaSettings > Privacy & SecurityOpen Browsing data, select the data type and time range, then clear the data.

Browser deletion tools allow users to select both the data categories and the period to remove. This can be done alongside changes to Google account activity controls.

Reviewing account settings, location records, YouTube history and browser data gives users a clearer view of stored information. Each control serves a different purpose and should be adjusted according to individual privacy needs.
