Wooden E-Bike Weighs Just 16.5 Kg, Carbon Wheels And 80 Km Range Defy Logic

Esel has officially introduced the eUrban, a wooden e-bike built for city mobility and aimed at riders who want something far beyond the usual aluminum commuter bike. The headline figure is hard to ignore: the bike weighs about 16.5 kg, uses an ash wood frame, and is claimed to travel up to 80 km on a full charge.

That combination makes the eUrban stand out in a crowded urban e-bike segment where lightweight frames, integrated batteries, and practical range usually come for a premium. Esel is betting that a different material choice can still deliver everyday usability, comfort, and performance without losing sight of the needs of city commuters.

A wooden frame that changes the conversation

The most distinctive part of the eUrban is its frame, which uses Esel Hollow Tec ash wood construction. The company says the approach is not only about looks, but also about creating a light structure with a premium feel and enough stiffness for daily urban riding.

Wood frames are still rare in the broader e-bike market, especially compared with aluminum alloy designs that dominate the category. Esel’s decision places the eUrban in a niche that blends craftsmanship, sustainability cues, and engineering with a more unconventional visual identity.

The claimed 16.5 kg weight is notable because it puts the bike in a competitive range for a fully equipped urban e-bike. That matters for riders who need to carry the bike up stairs, lift it into storage, or simply want a more agile feel in traffic.

Two versions, two priorities

Esel offers the eUrban in two trims, Basic and Performance, both aimed at urban users but tuned for different priorities. The Basic version uses 28-inch aluminum wheels and a Shimano Deore RD-T6000 10-speed drivetrain, with a listed weight of 18.5 kg.

The Performance version raises the specification level with 28-inch Pancho Craze carbon wheels and a Shimano Deore XT RD-M8000 11-speed system. Esel says this variant is 2 kg lighter than the Basic model, which can make a difference in acceleration, climbing convenience, and portability.

  1. eUrban Basic: 28-inch aluminum wheels, Shimano Deore RD-T6000 10-speed, 18.5 kg, €3,999.
  2. eUrban Performance: 28-inch Pancho Craze carbon wheels, Shimano Deore XT RD-M8000 11-speed, 2 kg lighter than Basic, €4,999.

Both versions sit in the premium category, but the Performance model clearly targets buyers who want the lightest setup and the more advanced drivetrain.

Motor, battery, and real-world commuting range

The eUrban uses a rear hub motor paired with a 350 Wh integrated battery. According to Esel, the setup produces 42 Nm of torque, which is a meaningful figure for stop-and-go traffic, moderate hills, and the constant pace changes typical of city riding.

The company claims a maximum range of up to 80 km per charge. In practical use, that figure will depend on rider weight, assistance mode, terrain, tire pressure, and how often the bike faces inclines or traffic starts.

Charging time is also important for commuters, and Esel says the battery can go from 0 to 100% in around four hours. That makes overnight charging a realistic routine for daily users who want the bike ready by morning.

Why carbon wheels matter on the Performance model

Esel’s choice to fit carbon wheels on the top version signals a focus on reducing weight while improving responsiveness. Carbon wheels can help lower rotational mass, which may support quicker handling and a more efficient feel, especially in urban riding where frequent braking and acceleration are common.

The company also equips both versions with Shimano MT410 dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes. This is a practical choice for city safety, since hydraulic discs usually provide more consistent braking control in wet or mixed conditions than simpler systems.

A carbon fork further adds to the premium positioning of the eUrban. Esel says the setup helps create a smoother ride, which is relevant for urban roads that often include patches, seams, and uneven surfaces.

Key specifications at a glance

Esel positions the eUrban as a commuter bike with standout materials, but the feature list also shows it is built around core performance needs. The size range includes small, medium, large, and extra-large, which should help riders find a better fit for daily use.

  • Frame: Esel Hollow Tec ash wood frame
  • Motor: rear hub drive
  • Battery: 350 Wh integrated
  • Torque: 42 Nm
  • Range: up to 80 km
  • Charging time: 4 hours
  • Brakes: Shimano MT410 dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes
  • Fork: carbon

The eUrban is now available through Esel’s official website, with pricing set at €3,999 for the Basic model and €4,999 for the Performance version. At those levels, the bike sits firmly in the premium urban e-bike market, where design, weight, and component quality often matter as much as raw utility.
