Southeast Asia Faces 18 Million Web Attacks, Indonesia Ranks Among the Top Three Targets

Asia Tenggara faced a broad wave of malicious web activity throughout 2025, with Kaspersky recording 18,015,162 detections across the region. The scale of the attacks underscores how internet-based threats remain a serious risk for businesses operating in a digital economy that continues to expand quickly.

Indonesia was among the hardest-hit countries, with 3,014,870 detections. That figure placed the country in the region’s top three targets, behind Vietnam with 8,437,695 detections and Malaysia with 3,361,453 detections.

Threats Spread Across the Region

The pressure was not limited to the largest markets. Singapore recorded 1,371,435 detections, followed by Thailand with 1,207,725 and the Philippines with 621,984.

This distribution suggests that web threats are active across the region rather than concentrated in one location. For companies, the numbers reflect a fast-moving digital risk environment that grows alongside online business activity.

More Complex Attack Patterns

Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, said cyber threats continue to evolve even when the total number of attacks does not always rise. He noted that the threat landscape has become more complex, especially in Vietnam and Singapore.

According to Hia, this shift is also linked to stronger corporate awareness and higher investment in cybersecurity. As organizations improve their defenses, attackers often adjust their methods in response.

Digital Growth Brings New Exposure

The region’s digital expansion has also widened the attack surface for cybercriminals. Data from the World Economic Forum shows that Southeast Asia’s digital economy is worth US$300 billion and is projected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030.

That growth creates major business opportunities, but it also increases the number of entry points that attackers can exploit. More digital services, connected devices, and internet-based operations mean more potential weaknesses in company systems.

What Web Threats Can Do

Web threats refer to internet-based attacks that can damage computer systems or steal user data. They can involve hacked websites, malicious downloads, or the exploitation of security flaws in systems.

Their impact is not limited to technical disruption. Such attacks can lead to unauthorized access, stolen credentials, service interruptions, misuse of systems, and data manipulation.

Protection Measures Highlighted by Kaspersky

Kaspersky recommends regular system updates to close security gaps more quickly. Operating systems, browsers, and applications that are not updated often become easy entry points for attackers.

The company also advises businesses to use strong passwords and two-factor authentication. For more advanced monitoring, Kaspersky points to solutions such as Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response, or MDR, which provide 24-hour oversight.

Rapid incident response is another key factor when an attack occurs. Kaspersky says integrated security systems such as Kaspersky Next XDR Expert can help detect and handle threats more comprehensively.

With Indonesia among the region’s most targeted countries, businesses face growing pressure to strengthen their digital defenses. As Southeast Asia’s digital economy keeps expanding, cybersecurity is becoming a core requirement for operational continuity and customer trust.
