A Linux-style handheld gaming experience may no longer be the only route to portable PC play. Lenovo Legion Tab 5 is now showing that an Android tablet can also run PC games through GameHub, which is changing the way the device is viewed in the mobile gaming landscape.
That shift does not mean Steam Deck is suddenly outdated. But it does mean Android tablets have started to enter a space that was once dominated by dedicated handheld gaming PCs and Windows-based portables.
Android tablets are moving closer to PC gaming
The main appeal of this setup is straightforward: games designed for PC can be launched on a device that does not run Windows. On Legion Tab 5, the early results were strong enough to make normal gameplay possible, not just a technical demonstration.
The tablet handled demanding PC titles during roughly two hours of testing. The experience was not flawless, but it was convincing enough to raise a serious question about how far Android tablets can go as portable gaming devices.
Performance is promising, but the experience is still uneven
Several issues appeared during testing. Some games took too long to load, which shows that the Android emulator still does not match the speed of devices built specifically for PC gaming.
Stability also remains a concern. Occasional crashes disrupted the experience, and game download speeds were reported to be highly inconsistent. For users who want a smooth and immediate setup, those problems still matter.
Cloud save support also ran into trouble. In Slay the Spire 2, cloud synchronization did not work properly during the test period.
GameHub is still in beta
Those limitations need to be viewed in context, because GameHub 6.0 is still in beta. At this stage, bugs and unfinished features are expected, so the current behavior of the software should not be treated as final.
That also means the crash issues, unstable download performance, and cloud save problems may still improve through later updates. For now, the Legion Tab 5 should be seen as an early look at what Android-based PC gaming can do, not as a finished product.
Steam Deck still has the cleaner experience
Even with Legion Tab 5 making progress, Steam Deck and Windows handhelds remain ahead in day-to-day usability. Their advantage lies in consistency, which matters as much as raw game support.
PC gaming on a portable device is not only about whether a game opens. Loading speed, system stability, account sync, and reliable downloads all shape the overall experience, and those are still areas where dedicated handheld PCs perform better.
A useful option for existing tablet owners
For now, the most realistic use case is for people who already own a powerful Android tablet. Trying an emulator in that situation is a low-risk way to add more value to hardware they already have.
This approach also appears better suited to less demanding Steam games. For players who want the most polished and hassle-free experience, a dedicated handheld PC remains the safer choice.
That is why Lenovo Legion Tab 5 and GameHub do not yet look like a direct threat to Steam Deck. Even so, they are strong enough to open a new conversation around portable gaming, especially if the beta software improves and Android tablets become a more credible option for PC games.
