Qualcomm is aiming to narrow the gap between premium and affordable smartphones with two new chipsets: Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. Both are designed to bring faster performance, smoother gaming, stronger camera support, and better power efficiency to devices that remain within reach of mainstream buyers.

The rollout is especially relevant for markets such as India, where Qualcomm has already confirmed that upcoming phones from several major brands will use the new platforms. Oppo, Xiaomi, Redmi, Realme, and Honor are among the names linked to the chips, signaling that a new wave of feature-rich mid-range and entry-level devices may arrive soon.

Two chipsets, two different priorities

Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is positioned as the more capable option for upper mid-range phones. It targets users who want steadier performance, improved gaming, and features that usually appear in more expensive devices.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, by contrast, is built for more affordable phones and focuses on smoother everyday use. It also brings better gaming performance to the entry-level segment, where even small gains in speed and efficiency can make a noticeable difference.

What Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 brings

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 uses an octa-core setup with four performance cores clocked up to 2.6GHz and four efficiency cores clocked up to 2.0GHz. Qualcomm says the chip is built on a 4nm process, which helps balance power savings with consistent performance.

On the graphics side, Qualcomm claims the GPU delivers a 21 percent improvement over Snapdragon 6 Gen 4. The platform also includes Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, Game Super Resolution, and Frames Per Second 3.0 to support sharper visuals and steadier frame rates during gaming.

Qualcomm also says app launches are up to 20 percent faster, screen stutter is reduced by 18 percent, and power efficiency improves by about 8 percent. That efficiency gain is said to translate into roughly two extra hours of video playback.

Connectivity and imaging move higher

Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 also adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 support. For displays, it supports FHD+ panels with refresh rates up to 144Hz, while camera support goes up to 200 megapixels.

One of the more notable additions is AI-based night vision, which is meant to improve photos and videos in low light. That combination of faster connectivity, high-refresh display support, and stronger camera capabilities makes the chip relevant for phones trying to look and feel more premium without leaving the mid-range category.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 pushes the lower-cost segment

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 follows a similar eight-core pattern, but with two performance cores clocked up to 2.4GHz and six efficiency cores at up to 2.0GHz. It supports Full HD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz, helping scrolling and animations feel smoother on budget devices.

Its biggest jump is in graphics. Qualcomm says the GPU is 77 percent faster than the previous generation, and for the first time in the Snapdragon 4 series, gaming support reaches up to 90FPS.

The company also claims app launches are 43 percent faster and screen stutter drops by 25 percent. Power efficiency is said to improve by 10 percent, which is expected to add around one extra hour of video streaming.

Budget phones get stronger camera and network support

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 supports sub-6GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 5, and Dual SIM Dual Active, allowing two SIM cards to remain active at the same time with 5G support. For cameras, it supports sensors up to 108 megapixels, showing how high-resolution imaging is becoming more common in lower-priced phones.

Qualcomm said Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 will arrive first in devices from Honor and Redmi. Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is confirmed for new phones from Oppo, Realme, and Redmi, while Oppo, Xiaomi, Redmi, and Realme were also named earlier as brands planning to use the new platforms.

The company also underlined India’s importance in its mobile strategy. Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Handsets, Qualcomm Technologies, said India continues to play an important role for Qualcomm Technologies as one of the world’s most dynamic mobile markets.
