Apple may be preparing one of the biggest shifts in its iPhone launch rhythm in years. Instead of placing every iPhone 18 model on sale at once, the company is reportedly splitting the lineup into separate release windows that would leave the standard model for later.
Under that schedule, the first wave would center on the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone Ultra. The regular iPhone 18 would arrive only in spring 2027, creating a longer wait for buyers who usually pick the base model as the most accessible new iPhone.
A launch plan built around premium models
The clearest effect of the new timing would be a stronger push toward Apple’s higher-end devices. Buyers who want to upgrade soon after launch may have fewer choices outside the Pro tier while the standard model remains unavailable.
That setup could also lift Apple’s average selling price in the final quarter of the year. For many users, the regular iPhone 17, which starts at $799, remains the safer option for getting the newest generation without moving into Pro pricing.
A split release would also give Apple two separate sales moments. The first would come from the Pro lineup at the end of 2026, followed by another wave when the standard iPhone 18 finally reaches stores months later.
The foldable model follows its own timeline
Among the devices mentioned, the foldable iPhone Ultra appears to have the most unusual rollout. It is expected to be announced together with the iPhone 18 series in September 2026, but sales would not begin until November or December 2026.
That gap would give the iPhone 18 Pro Max time to dominate attention in the flagship category before the foldable model starts shipping. It also reduces the chance that buyers will immediately shift their focus to the more futuristic device.
The extra time may also reflect the demands of production. The foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to use new components with high complexity, which would require additional testing to reduce the risk of hardware issues at launch.
Why Apple may want a second sales peak
A November release for the iPhone Ultra would also place it in a useful position for the holiday shopping season. Smartphone sales often slow after the usual September and October release period, and a premium new device could help Apple regain momentum later in the year.
The foldable model is also expected to sit far apart from the regular iPhone range in both image and price. With a projected tag of $2,000, it appears aimed at the luxury segment as much as at early adopters.
Apple has used a similar approach before. In 2017, the company introduced the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, with the latter arriving later but still keeping Apple in the spotlight through the end of the year thanks to its full-screen design.
A broader change in how Apple manages attention
The reported iPhone 18 schedule suggests Apple is no longer only thinking about hardware launch day. It is also shaping when each model gets the most attention, and that timing may be becoming part of the product strategy itself.
By separating the standard model, the Pro lineup, and the foldable iPhone Ultra, Apple could keep each device in focus for longer. That approach also leaves consumers to decide whether to wait for a specific model or move sooner toward a higher-priced option.
For now, the bigger question is not only which iPhone 18 model buyers prefer, but whether Apple’s new launch rhythm will influence what they buy and when they buy it.
