Apple’s next Pro Max model is already shaping up to be a study in restraint rather than a dramatic redesign. The latest leak suggests the iPhone 18 Pro Max will keep the same 8.75 mm thickness as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while gaining a much larger battery.
That combination points to a familiar exterior with a more ambitious interior. Instead of making the phone visibly thicker, Apple appears to be focusing on internal efficiency, squeezing in more capacity without changing the overall profile in a noticeable way.
A larger battery without a thicker body
The leak comes from Ice Universe on Weibo, who says the iPhone 18 Pro Max will not grow to 8.8 mm as previously predicted. The difference is tiny at just 0.05 mm, but it matters in a flagship lineup where even small physical changes attract attention.
The battery, meanwhile, is said to rise into the 5,100 mAh to 5,200 mAh range. That would be a clear step up from the iPhone 17 Pro Max eSIM version, which is reported to carry a 5,088 mAh battery.
Internal changes seem to be the real focus
If Apple keeps the body unchanged while increasing battery size, the company will likely need to adjust the internal layout or shrink other components. That kind of packaging strategy would allow the phone to gain endurance without altering the feel of the device from the outside.
The same report says the display size will remain at 6.9 inches. With the screen, thickness, and battery all part of the conversation, the most notable changes appear to be happening inside the chassis rather than on the surface.
Weight may tell a different story
Even if the thickness stays the same, the phone may not feel identical in hand. Earlier leaks have suggested the iPhone 18 Pro Max could weigh more than 240 grams.
If that happens, it would make the model the heaviest iPhone since the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The added weight could come from the larger battery or from other hardware that has not yet been detailed.
Other rumored upgrades are also on the table
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are also expected to bring several other changes. Those rumors include a smaller Dynamic Island, Apple’s next-generation C2 modem, a revised Camera Control, and a main camera with variable aperture support.
Taken together, the leaks suggest Apple is aiming for a more refined upgrade path. The emphasis appears to be on better use of space, stronger camera hardware, and improved connectivity rather than a bold redesign.
Ice Universe also says Apple’s attention this year is heavily centered on a device rumored to be called iPhone Ultra. That name has often been linked to reports about Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is expected to join the lineup as a new category.
Against that backdrop, the iPhone 18 Pro Max looks like a model built on gradual improvement. Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil the iPhone 18 series in the third quarter of 2026, while the iPhone 18 Pro may arrive in September alongside the company’s first foldable device.
For now, the 8.75 mm thickness is one of the clearest details tied to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. If the leak holds up, Apple seems ready to keep a familiar shape while pushing harder on battery capacity and internal hardware.
