The Xiaomi 17T Pro is making its strongest case through its telephoto camera, and the result is more than a simple zoom feature. With a 50 MP periscope lens offering 5x optical zoom, the phone positions long-range shooting as one of its main strengths rather than an extra specification on the side.
That focus becomes more convincing when the camera is used on real subjects. The device shows that high zoom can still deliver solid results when sensor size and processing work together, especially for moving subjects and fine details.
A larger sensor gives the Pro model an advantage
The rear camera setup on the Xiaomi 17T Pro includes a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP periscope telephoto camera, a 12 MP ultrawide lens, and a 32 MP selfie camera. For the main camera, the Pro version uses a 1/1.31-inch sensor, which is larger than the 1/1.55-inch sensor on the regular model.
That difference matters because a larger sensor can capture light more effectively. In practice, this helps preserve detail more consistently across different shooting conditions.
5x and 10x zoom still hold up well
Testing on moving subjects such as ballet dancers showed that the 5x mode, with a 115mm focal length, could produce clean half-body shots. Facial detail remained sharp, while separation between the subject and the background looked smooth and natural.
At 10x zoom with a 230mm focal length, the camera was still able to capture a close-up expression. Small elements such as head accessories, light makeup, and the texture of a ballet costume remained clearly visible without the need to move closer to the stage.
It is not limited to portraits
The telephoto lens was also tested on a miniature high-rise building and urban trees. In that scene, it managed to isolate one building from the dense miniature landscape, even under strong backlight.
At 10x magnification, the compression effect made a concert-stage miniature appear more dramatic and visually alive. Architectural details and leaves were still maintained with good clarity.
In-sensor zoom helps preserve color
In-sensor zoom also plays a role in the final result. Bright stage-light colors remained well preserved, without a major drop in quality at higher zoom levels.
That combination makes the Xiaomi 17T Pro’s telephoto camera feel like a practical tool rather than a secondary add-on. It has clear potential for distant subjects, city architecture, and portrait shots with a stronger visual character.
Prices and color options in Indonesia
Xiaomi Indonesia offers the series in three colors: Black, Deep Blue, and Deep Violet. For the Indonesian market, the Xiaomi 17T Pro starts at Rp 11.999.000 for the 12 GB / 256 GB variant and Rp 12.999.000 for the 12 GB / 512 GB variant.
The regular Xiaomi 17T is priced at Rp 8.999.000 for 12 GB / 256 GB and Rp 9.999.000 for 12 GB / 512 GB. The launch was held at The Westin Hotel in Kuningan, South Jakarta, with a dedicated demo area so the camera features, especially the telephoto lens, could be tested directly by the media.
With a larger main sensor and zoom performance that remains sharp at 10x, the Xiaomi 17T Pro stands out as a serious option for users who prioritize mobile photography. The series shows that telephoto cameras still have room to deliver real value in a premium smartphone.
