Apple’s next developer conference is set up as more than a routine software showcase. WWDC 2026 is drawing attention because it may also mark Tim Cook’s final WWDC before retirement, placing Apple’s AI promises under an unusually bright spotlight.
That pressure is centered on Apple Intelligence and Siri. After two years of messaging around a more advanced AI experience, Apple now faces a moment that could shape how the company is viewed in the era of artificial intelligence.
WWDC 2026 is scheduled to open on June 8, 2026. The keynote will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time and will be streamed on YouTube, the Apple TV app, and the Apple Event website.
As in previous years, Apple is expected to introduce iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. Developer betas should follow after the main announcements, with public betas arriving in July and stable releases landing in the fall.
Siri is the main test
The biggest focus is Siri, which is expected to become far more capable. The assistant is said to gain access to email, messages, files, photos, and other data so it can understand users with deeper context.
That would allow Siri to summarize information, analyze files, and help complete tasks on iPhone. Apple is under pressure to catch up with AI chatbots that have advanced quickly in the market, making the assistant’s next step especially important.
Siri is also said to understand what is currently on screen. If a message contains an address, for example, Siri could add it directly to Contacts without a lengthy manual process.
That screen-aware behavior suggests a shift in Apple Intelligence. Siri would no longer be positioned only as a voice assistant waiting for simple commands, but as a tool that can act on what the user is looking at.
A more chatbot-like Siri
Reports also say the updated Siri may arrive as a separate app in Apple’s newest operating systems. That approach would make it feel closer to modern chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini.
Users would reportedly be able to interact through both voice and text. The new interface is also said to include an “Ask Siri” bar so questions can be typed directly.
Siri is further rumored to accept photos, PDFs, and documents for processing. If that arrives, the assistant would move beyond voice commands and into broader productivity use.
To support the new Siri, Apple is said to be working with Google. Google and Apple have reportedly said that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Gemini, with Gemini powering future Apple Intelligence features.
AI tools may spread across Apple apps
Apple’s AI push is not limited to Siri. The company is also said to be preparing a new Visual Intelligence feature by moving it from the Camera Control button on iPhone into the Camera app.
In iOS 27, Visual Intelligence is reportedly able to recognize nutrition information on food packaging. It is also said to scan phone numbers and addresses from business cards and save them automatically to Contacts.
The Photos app is also expected to gain AI-based editing tools under the Apple Intelligence Tools umbrella. Among the options mentioned are background extension and perspective changes after a photo has been taken.
Writing Tools are also being tested in a smarter version. According to Bloomberg, there will be a “Write with Siri” toggle at the top of the keyboard and a “Help Me Write” button when Siri is activated inside a text field.
Apple is also said to be adding a grammar checker to complement the spelling checker already available. Users would be able to accept or reject the AI’s suggestions.
Early signs of a foldable iPhone
WWDC 2026 may also offer an early hint about Apple’s next hardware direction. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is reportedly set for introduction in September, and some supporting features could appear earlier as part of iOS 27.
Apple is said to be preparing a new interface and experience designed to take advantage of the larger display on the foldable device. One rumored feature is split screen, something that is not available on regular iPhones.
Those additions would make this WWDC more significant than a standard operating system update cycle. The event is expected to show how software, AI, and new device formats are being moved in the same direction.
