Apple’s next major Mac move may not be a chip refresh or a minor redesign, but a shift in how the laptop itself is used. Reports point to a new high-end MacBook Ultra that could become the first MacBook with a touch screen, marking one of the biggest changes Apple has made to the Mac line in years.
The timing also adds to the interest. If panel shipments stay on schedule, the device could arrive in the third quarter of 2026, with September seen as the most plausible launch window.
A new tier above the current MacBook Pro
The rumored machine is described as sitting above today’s MacBook Pro family rather than replacing it outright. That positioning matters, because Apple appears to be preparing a more premium category with a different design direction and a stronger feature set.
The name MacBook Ultra suggests that Apple may want to separate this model from the regular pro lineup. Along with the possibility of touch input, the device is said to bring a thinner and lighter body, which would help distinguish it from the current MacBook Pro models.
OLED displays in 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch sizes
Display size changes look small on paper, but they point to a broader redesign. The rumored panels measure 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches, compared with the current 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro sizes.
That slight increase suggests slimmer bezels and a more modern physical look. Omdia says Samsung Display is preparing to begin shipping new hybrid OLED panels for the MacBook Ultra in July 2026, which strengthens the impression that production planning is moving forward.
The panels are also expected to use oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology. That setup is described as more efficient than conventional OLED implementations, which matters for a professional laptop that has to balance battery life and high performance.
A bigger shift than a routine update
If these details prove accurate, this would be more than a simple spec bump. Apple has not made a major visual change to the MacBook Pro since the M1 Pro and M1 Max generation arrived in 2021, when the company emphasized practicality for professional users.
This rumored model points in a different direction. A thinner chassis, OLED panels, new silicon, and touch support would give Apple a cleaner way to define a higher-end Mac that looks and behaves differently from the existing MacBook Pro range.
The chip lineup is expected to move to M6 Pro and M6 Max. That part is not surprising, since Apple regularly advances its Mac silicon, but it becomes more significant when paired with a broader redesign rather than a routine internal upgrade.
Touch input would mark the biggest philosophical change
The most attention-grabbing detail remains the touch screen rumor. If Apple follows through, it would be one of the most radical changes in Mac history, because the company has long kept a clear line between Mac and iPad.
That division has been central to Apple’s product strategy. Macs have traditionally centered on keyboard, trackpad, and mouse input, while touch has been reserved for the iPad, so a touch-enabled MacBook would signal a meaningful shift in how Apple defines the platform.
There is also talk of changes around the front camera area. Apple may replace the current notch with a Dynamic Island-style cutout, which could create a more unified look across its products while also opening room for controls, notifications, and live activity on the display area.
