Instagram has begun rolling out a long-requested feature that lets users manually rearrange posts in their profile grid. The update gives Android and iPhone users more control over how their profiles look, without needing to delete and repost content just to change the order.
The change matters because the profile grid has long followed a strict chronological layout. For users who care about visual presentation, that often made it difficult to build a profile that matched a planned aesthetic or layout.
How the new grid controls work
Until now, Instagram only allowed users to pin up to three posts at the top of a profile. Everything else remained locked into the order it was published, leaving little room for visual editing beyond those pinned items.
With the new Reorder Grid option, photos and videos can be placed anywhere in the profile grid. Pinned posts remain fixed at the top and are not affected by the rearranging process, so the two tools now work alongside each other.
The feature is designed to be simple to use on both Android and iPhone. Once it appears on an account, the process starts directly from the profile page and takes only a few taps.
Steps to use Reorder Grid
Users can open their Instagram profile, select any photo or video in the grid, and choose the Reorder Grid option. From there, the post can be dragged into the desired position before confirming the change.
The steps are straightforward:
- Open the Instagram profile page.
- Select a photo or video in the grid.
- Tap Reorder Grid.
- Move the post to the preferred position.
- Tap the back chevron in the top-left corner to finish.
Once completed, the new arrangement appears immediately on the profile. That means older uploads and newer posts can now be reorganized to fit a cleaner or more deliberate layout.
Why the launch is drawing attention
Instagram head Adam Mosseri first said the feature was coming in January last year, after acknowledging that many users had carefully arranged their profiles before the app changed thumbnail formatting from square to taller vertical shapes.
That shift disrupted a lot of profiles that had been built around the older format, making the manual reorder option especially welcome. When the official launch was announced in June, Mosseri simply posted “finally,” underscoring how long the feature had been awaited.
The company also confirmed on its official Threads account that the rollout began gradually this week. Because the launch is being handled in stages, some users may need to wait a few days before the option appears in their own app.
For users who treat their Instagram profile as a curated space, the feature marks a meaningful change. It adds a level of flexibility that was missing before and makes the profile grid easier to shape without extra work.
