OpenAI’s planned meeting with Samsung in South Korea has been called off, adding fresh uncertainty to one of the more closely watched chip partnerships in the AI industry. The cancellation comes as reports say talks over a custom AI chip project have slowed because the two sides no longer see the strategy the same way.
OpenAI said Sam Altman’s trip was postponed because of unavoidable personal circumstances. Even so, the timing has drawn attention because the visit had been expected to place Samsung at the center of OpenAI’s next phase of infrastructure planning.
According to reports in South Korea, Altman had been scheduled to visit the country on June 14 and 15, 2026. His agenda was said to include meetings with Samsung Electronics, Kakao, and Naver, making the trip broader than a single corporate stop.
The visit was also expected to include an appearance at Samsung Electronics’ Digital City for the “DX Insight Talk” event. Altman was additionally slated to meet two senior Samsung executives, TM Roh and Jeon Young-hyun.
What changed behind the scenes
The attention around the canceled trip comes from the wider relationship between OpenAI and Samsung, which has been under discussion for several years. The two companies have explored chip collaboration for a long time, while some Samsung affiliates have already signed service deals to support OpenAI’s large-scale data center buildout.
That broader relationship has made any shift in momentum especially notable. In the AI sector, access to computing power and chip supply has become one of the most important strategic issues for companies building and running advanced models.
Last month, reports said Samsung was developing a custom inference processing unit for OpenAI. Chips of this type are typically used to run AI models, which makes them particularly important for services operating at scale.
Those same reports later said the project had stalled. The reason given was a strategic mismatch between OpenAI and Samsung, leaving the custom chip effort temporarily stuck.
