Apple’s 2027 Gamble, Foldable iPhone and Camera-Equipped AirPods Near Launch

Apple is reportedly preparing two of its most ambitious products in years: the company’s first foldable iPhone and a new version of AirPods with an integrated camera. If the current plan holds, both devices could arrive by late 2027 and mark a major shift in Apple’s premium hardware and AI strategy.

The timing matters as much as the products themselves. The launches are said to align with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, turning the release into more than a product refresh and making it a symbolic moment for one of the technology industry’s most influential product lines.

A foldable iPhone aimed at a landmark year

The foldable design is being positioned as one of the biggest form-factor changes in iPhone history. It would also place Apple directly into a category that has been dominated for years by rivals, even as demand for foldable phones continues to grow.

People familiar with the internal plans say the official launch is targeted for late 2027. That would make the device both a design milestone and a strategic release tied to the iPhone’s 20-year legacy.

Apple reportedly views the rollout as one of the largest in its history. Beyond the consumer attention it could attract, the company is also expected to see meaningful business and revenue upside if the plan stays on schedule.

AirPods with cameras push Apple deeper into AI

Alongside the foldable iPhone, Apple is also developing a new AirPods model with a built-in camera. The addition is seen as a potential step toward more AI-driven experiences, expanding AirPods beyond their traditional role as wireless audio devices.

The camera feature could open the door to more interactive use cases for users. With AI at the center of the effort, Apple appears to be exploring how its audio hardware can become more connected and context-aware.

The project is moving quickly. Development of the camera-equipped AirPods reportedly accelerated sharply starting in May, signaling that the hardware and software work is advancing faster than expected.

Prototypes are already close to final form

According to the latest details, the AirPods prototype now includes hardware and software components that are already close to their final state. That suggests the product has moved well beyond an early concept and into a more advanced stage of development.

The foldable iPhone is also said to have reached a mature stage in recent months. Apple’s research teams are reportedly keeping both hardware projects on schedule as the company prepares for a major product cycle.

Viewed together, the two launches show Apple making parallel bets on design and intelligence. One expands the iPhone in a new physical direction, while the other pushes AirPods into a more advanced AI-focused role.

John Ternus faces an early test

The rollout is also expected to become an early challenge for John Ternus, who is scheduled to formally take over Apple’s top leadership role on 1 September. His first full year in charge is expected to be shaped by these new products.

That leadership transition gives the 2027 product cycle additional weight. If Apple delivers both devices as planned, the end of 2027 could become one of the company’s most important turning points in recent years.
