Sharp has kept its flagship rhythm alive with the Aquos R11, a new premium model that puts its biggest emphasis on imaging. The handset arrives as the successor to the Aquos R10, but the most noticeable update is not just raw performance or display brightness.
It is the addition of a new telephoto camera that gives this Japanese flagship a more distinctive identity, especially at a time when many other local brands have slowed their smartphone launches.
Leica-tuned cameras lead the upgrade
The Aquos R11 uses a triple rear camera system developed with Leica HEKTOR. Sharp says the main improvement is the new telephoto lens, which is designed to make the camera package more useful for zoom photography.
The primary camera uses a 50.3MP sensor with a 1/1.55-inch size and a 23mm lens with f/1.9 aperture. It also supports OIS and EIS for more stable stills and video.
Sharp pairs it with a 50.3MP ultra-wide camera using a 1/2.55-inch sensor, a 13mm lens, and f/2.2 aperture. The lens offers a 122-degree field of view for wider scenes.
The headline feature is the 38.5MP telephoto camera, which comes with a 68mm lens and 2.9x optical zoom. It carries an f/2.4 aperture, plus OIS and EIS to help keep long-range shots steadier.
A 14-channel spectral sensor is also included to improve color accuracy. On the front, the phone carries a 50.3MP selfie camera with a 23mm lens, f/2.2 aperture, and EIS support.
Brighter display and a tougher body
Sharp equips the Aquos R11 with a 6.5-inch Pro IGZO OLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. The panel supports an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 240Hz, which should help with smoother scrolling and gaming.
The company claims peak brightness reaches 3,600 nits, about 20 percent higher than the previous generation. At full white screen conditions, brightness can still reach 1,800 nits, improving readability outdoors.
Durability also looks like a priority. The front and back are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, while IP68 and IP69 certification provide resistance against dust and water.
Sharp has also added MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-810H military standards. The protection covers impacts, extreme temperatures, and water exposure, and the device is said to be safe for cleaning with alcohol wipes or hand soap.
Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, bigger cooling, and large storage
Inside, the Aquos R11 steps up to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, replacing the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 used in the previous model. Qualcomm says the chip delivers higher CPU speed and stronger GPU performance, making it better suited to gaming and heavy multitasking.
Sharp has also fitted a larger vapor chamber than the one used in the Aquos R10 to help manage heat more effectively. Memory and storage are generous as well, with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.1 internal storage.
One change may disappoint some users: Sharp has removed the microSD slot that was still available on the earlier model.
The phone ships with Android 16 out of the box. Sharp also promises three generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
Battery, connectivity, and the Aquarium light
The Aquos R11 carries a 5,100mAh battery, which Sharp describes as the largest in the Aquos lineup. Even so, the capacity is only about 100mAh higher than its predecessor.
Wired charging goes up to 36W, and Sharp says a full charge can be completed in around 90 minutes.
Connectivity support includes USB-C with USB 3.2 Gen 1 and DisplayPort 1.4, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and dual-band GPS. The phone also includes a rear LED light called Aquarium, a rare touch among smartphones.
The Aquarium light can act as a notification indicator and a camera assist light. It can also show ambient animations such as a campfire, flowing water, and swaying leaves, complete with special sound effects supervised by Japanese sound designer Shinya Kiyokawa.
Price and availability in Japan
Sharp plans to begin selling the Aquos R11 in early July through its official online store in Japan. The phone will also be offered by DoCoMo and SoftBank.
The official price is set at 163,900 Yen, or around Rp17 jutaan. Sharp is offering three color options: Terracotta, Navy, and Ivory, while global availability has not been announced, leaving the model exclusive to the Japanese market for now.
