Apple is reportedly preparing a second-generation iPhone Air with a far more noticeable upgrade in the camera department. The model, said to be called iPhone Air 2, is currently expected to arrive in spring 2027, roughly between March and May.
That timing keeps the Air line on a relatively long cycle, but the bigger story is the direction of the hardware. Instead of staying as a thin design-first device with limited compromises, the next model is said to move closer to Apple’s higher-end iPhones in both camera setup and chip class.
Dual cameras would be the biggest shift
The most significant rumored change is the rear camera system. The first iPhone Air relied on a single rear camera, while iPhone Air 2 is said to add a second lens.
According to the report, Apple would include an ultrawide camera alongside the main camera. That would give users a wider field of view and more flexibility for everyday photography, especially in tighter spaces or landscape shots.
For the Air lineup, this would be a meaningful step because the camera has been one of the clearest areas separating it from more premium iPhone models. A dual-camera setup would narrow that gap without abandoning the thin-device identity.
Thin design stays, but the focus is broader
The slim body is still expected to remain the defining trait of the Air series. Apple appears to want the device to keep its lightweight profile while improving the parts that matter most to buyers.
Battery life is also reportedly on the upgrade list. The company is said to be working on better endurance for iPhone Air 2, although the method has not been confirmed.
That improvement could come from a larger battery, a more efficient chip, or software optimizations. In a thin phone, every millimeter matters, so battery gains would likely be just as important as the camera changes.
A Pro-level chip is also being discussed
Another notable rumor is the use of the A20 Pro chip. The same processor is also expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro, which is said to launch earlier.
If that proves accurate, Apple would be bringing a Pro-class chip into the Air family. That would mark a substantial leap for a lineup traditionally positioned around design priorities rather than top-tier specifications.
The chip could also support the camera upgrade and help improve battery efficiency, though Apple has not revealed whether the full A20 Pro experience would be carried over unchanged to the thinner Air model.
Launch window remains unconfirmed
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, citing people familiar with Apple’s internal plans, said the device is being developed under the internal codename V62. He also said the company may unveil iPhone Air 2 together with the regular iPhone 18 in the same spring window.
Apple has not confirmed the phone’s existence or its release schedule, so the current details remain in the rumor stage. Still, the combination of a dual rear camera, improved battery life, and an A20 Pro chip suggests the next Air could be a much more serious upgrade than the first generation.
