Apple has drawn a clear line around watchOS 27, and five popular Apple Watch models are on the wrong side of it. The company says the latest software demands more processing power than these devices can deliver, which means they will not receive the new features coming with the update.
The affected models are the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2, and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. They are still expected to receive periodic security updates, but feature upgrades from watchOS 27 will no longer be part of the package.
Hardware, not just age, is the deciding factor
Cait Dooley, Apple’s Product Marketing Manager for Apple Watch and Health, said the restriction comes down to hardware specifications. According to her, the newest features in watchOS 27 require significantly greater processing capability to run smoothly and at an optimal level.
That distinction matters because Apple is not treating support as a simple matter of device age. Instead, the company is aligning compatibility with performance readiness, which is why newer models are being prioritized for the update.
Dooley said advanced Siri AI features and the new more responsive tap gesture work best on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, as well as the third-generation SE. In practice, that means the five excluded models remain usable, but they will not get the new experience Apple is building into watchOS 27.
watchOS 27 is tied closely to Apple Intelligence
David Clark, Senior Director of watchOS Software Engineering at Apple, said watchOS 27 is designed to strengthen the Apple Intelligence ecosystem. In that strategy, Apple Watch is becoming an even more important companion device inside Apple’s wider software environment.
Clark described Apple Watch as the most practical and intimate way to interact with Siri, since it sits on the wrist and is always within easy reach. That positioning makes the device especially useful when users need quick access to digital information while keeping their hands occupied.
The goal is not only a better interface, but also a smoother experience when tasks move between Apple Watch and iPhone. Apple wants Siri behavior to feel consistent across devices, rather than fragmented by hardware limits.
Moving tasks between devices is now part of the pitch
Apple used a simple example to explain the direction of watchOS 27. A user could ask Siri on Apple Watch to show a recipe ingredient list while shopping, then continue viewing the same list on iPhone in a larger format.
According to Clark, instant task handoff with no delay is one of the main selling points of the latest Siri AI integration. That approach shows Apple Watch is being positioned less as a standalone gadget and more as part of a broader Apple workflow.
This shift also signals a tighter hardware requirement for future wearable features. The deeper the AI integration goes, the more Apple appears to be relying on newer components to keep the experience stable and responsive.
Release remains in the beta stage
watchOS 27 is currently available only as a developer beta. Apple plans to release a public beta next month before rolling out the final version to users worldwide in the fall of 2026.
For owners of the five unsupported models, that means security support will continue for now, but new watchOS features will not. The update makes one thing clear: Apple’s next software era is being built around stricter hardware expectations.
