Samsung Begins iPhone Foldable Panel Production, Apple Shifts to a More Advanced M16 Display

Samsung Display has reportedly started producing OLED panels for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, a development that signals the project is moving closer to manufacturing rather than remaining a long-running concept. The device is expected to arrive in September 2026, with some reports suggesting Apple may position it under the iPhone Ultra name.

The latest update also points to a notable change in Apple’s display strategy. Instead of the earlier M14 display stack, the foldable iPhone is now said to use Samsung’s newer M16 luminescent material, a shift that could shape the device’s screen performance from the start.

Samsung’s Role in the Supply Chain

Samsung Display is understood to have secured its position as the main supplier after reaching an OLED production success rate of around 80%. That level is seen as an important sign that the company is ready to meet Apple’s production standards for a premium foldable device.

Production is said to be taking place at Samsung’s facility in Vietnam. Apple has reportedly ordered three million OLED panels for 2026, which offers an early indication of the scale behind its foldable plans.

Why the M16 Panel Matters

The move from M14 to M16 is significant because the display is one of the most important components in a foldable phone. According to the reports, the M16 material brings higher brightness, more accurate color reproduction, better power efficiency, and longer component lifespan.

Those improvements are especially relevant for a product that will rely heavily on its screen as both a selling point and a daily-use interface. Better brightness can improve visibility in different lighting conditions, while more accurate color reproduction remains a key expectation in the premium segment.

Improved power efficiency also matters because a foldable device must balance a large display with battery endurance. A more efficient panel could help reduce power consumption without sacrificing image quality.

Thin Design Through CoE Technology

The OLED panel is also said to use Color Filter on Encapsulation, or CoE technology. This approach can make the display thinner while reducing light reflection, which is valuable in a foldable design where internal space is limited.

CoE does not require an additional polarizer layer, allowing the panel structure to stay more compact. In practice, that can give designers more flexibility in setting the device’s thickness, hinge layout, and internal component arrangement.

Lower reflection can also improve the viewing experience, especially on a premium handset where screen quality is expected to remain a central attraction. For a foldable iPhone, that combination of thinness and visual comfort could become one of the defining advantages.

Price Pressure Adds More Context

The foldable iPhone is emerging in a period when Apple is also dealing with broader pricing pressure. The company has indicated that product prices may rise because of an ongoing crisis involving RAM and storage supply.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, CEO Tim Cook did not specify which products would be affected or when the changes would take effect. Even so, the pricing backdrop adds more weight to a new premium device built around an advanced display.

The iPhone 18 Pro, expected in the second half of this year, is also believed to be among the models that may be affected by higher pricing. That estimate was based on internal analysis and information from the research firm TechInsights, according to the Wall Street Journal.

No price has been confirmed for the foldable iPhone, which may still launch as the iPhone Ultra. What is now clear is that one of its most critical parts has already entered production, bringing Apple’s foldable ambitions a step closer to reality.

With Samsung Display manufacturing panels in Vietnam and Apple reportedly choosing a more advanced screen material, the focus is shifting to how the company will present its first foldable entry in the premium smartphone market.
