Steam Machine Faces Fresh Doubts as Cyberpunk 2077 Struggles to Hold 30 FPS

Steam Machine is under closer scrutiny after benchmark results circulating on social media suggested that the device may struggle in demanding modern games. One of the most discussed figures is a reported 28 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, a result that has raised questions about how well Valve’s compact gaming PC can justify its premium positioning.

The concern goes beyond a single game. For many players, the issue now is whether a device built to bridge the gap between console convenience and PC flexibility can still deliver the performance expected at its price.

Cyberpunk 2077 becomes the main talking point

Play4Index’s widely shared post is at the center of the debate. In that benchmark, Steam Machine reportedly reached 28 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with medium settings and ray tracing enabled.

That number matters because Cyberpunk 2077 is often used as a stress test for modern hardware. A result below 30 FPS suggests that the experience may feel less comfortable than many gamers would expect from a premium machine.

Other demanding games have also added to the skepticism. Black Myth: Wukong was reportedly running at around 20 FPS at 1440p with Very High settings, which only intensified doubts about the device’s gaming headroom.

These results have not been independently verified, so they cannot be treated as final. Even so, they were enough to trigger comparisons with similarly priced gaming PCs and current-generation consoles.

Price is now part of the criticism

The discussion has quickly moved from raw frame rates to overall value. Steam Machine starts at $1,049, a price that places it above the standard PS5 and even the PS5 Pro after Sony’s recent price increase.

That pricing makes the benchmark results more sensitive. If a more expensive device is struggling to match or exceed console performance in key games, the value proposition becomes harder to defend.

The device also sits in a complicated category. It is not a traditional console, but it is not being positioned as a full desktop gaming PC that can be assembled and tuned for maximum performance either.

Because of that middle ground, buyers are likely to judge it on both convenience and power. If the hardware cannot clearly win on performance, the appeal of the format may be reduced for players who care about demanding AAA titles.

PS5 comparisons add more pressure

The conversation has grown louder after additional analysis, including from Digital Foundry, suggested that Valve’s compact gaming system could fall behind the PS5 in several titles. That comparison gave more weight to the benchmark numbers spreading online.

Games mentioned in that discussion included Alan Wake 2, Crimson Desert, and Forza Horizon 5. In some cases, the PS5 was said to deliver higher average frame rates while requiring less configuration from the player.

Ease of use is an important part of the appeal here. A machine shaped like a console is expected to offer a simple experience, so extra tuning or compromises can quickly weaken its overall appeal.

If a lower-priced console can provide better or steadier performance in selected games, many buyers will naturally question whether the Steam Machine is the smarter purchase.

Community reactions remain divided

On social media and Reddit, reactions have split into two camps. Some users argue that a premium-priced device should not be struggling this much in heavy AAA games, especially when the numbers being shared look modest.

Others say the machine should not be judged only by benchmark charts. They point to its compact design, access to the wider Steam ecosystem, and the flexibility that comes with a PC-based platform.

Still, the counterargument remains strong among PC enthusiasts. Many believe other gaming systems in a similar price range can offer better performance under heavy workloads.

That tension leaves Steam Machine in an uncertain position for now. It still has an attractive format and a clear ecosystem advantage, but current benchmark chatter has made its performance ceiling the main issue facing the device.

At the moment, the numbers circulating online do not provide a final verdict on the hardware. But the reported 28 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p medium with ray tracing, plus roughly 20 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong at 1440p Very High, are enough to keep the focus on price, performance, and whether Steam Machine can compete with today’s AAA expectations.
