HUAWEI is pushing the compact tablet category with the MatePad Mini, a device that tries to split the difference between a smartphone and a laptop without losing portability. At around 260 grams and just 5.2 mm thick, it is built for users who want a screen that travels easily but still feels useful for work, study, and entertainment.
The positioning is clear: this is not only a mini tablet for casual use, but also a device aimed at people who move often and still need to read documents, edit content, sketch ideas, or join online meetings. That combination is what makes the MatePad Mini feel like a direct challenge in a segment long associated with the iPad mini 7.
Built for productivity on the move
For everyday work, the MatePad Mini supports WPS Office 3.0, allowing users to handle documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on a smaller device. It also supports PDF viewing, graph and report review, and digital document signing.
Online meetings are covered as well, with Zoom and Microsoft Teams included in the supported app lineup. HUAWEI also says AI-based apps such as ChatGPT and Gemini are supported, aiming to help users gather references, summarize documents, and outline presentation ideas faster.
A display designed to be read for hours
One of the strongest selling points is the OLED panel with PaperMatte Display technology. HUAWEI describes it as the first Flexible OLED PaperMatte Display in the industry, and the focus here is clearly on viewing comfort.
The display is meant to reduce reflections and glare, which matters for people who spend long sessions reading e-books, academic journals, PDF files, comics, or digital manga. The larger viewing area compared with a smartphone also makes reading and typing more practical.
That paper-like visual feel is part of the product’s appeal, especially for users who want a screen that is easier on the eyes in different lighting conditions. HUAWEI places the emphasis not only on entertainment, but also on sustained productivity.
Notes, handwriting, and creative work
The MatePad Mini also targets users who prefer digital note-taking. It supports handwriting notes, mind maps, and PDF annotations in a format that feels more intuitive than typing alone.
Two AI functions add to that experience. AI Equation Recognition can identify handwritten mathematical expressions and convert them into a cleaner digital format, while AI Handwriting Enhancement helps improve the readability of handwritten notes.
For drawing and sketching, HUAWEI includes GoPaint and stylus support. That combination is intended for illustrations, quick sketches, and idea capture without needing a larger tablet or separate drawing device.
Entertainment still matters
HUAWEI is also positioning the MatePad Mini as a daily entertainment device. It can be used for watching films, following cooking tutorials, or accompanying workouts such as treadmill sessions and yoga.
The company says the OLED and PaperMatte Display combination helps deliver a more immersive viewing experience while staying comfortable for the eyes. For gaming, the compact format is presented as a middle ground between a phone that feels too small and a large tablet that may feel unwieldy over long sessions.
That balance is part of the appeal for users who want a device that works both for content consumption and for games that benefit from a wider display than a typical phone offers.
Apps, service, and launch offers
Access to apps is handled through AppGallery, HUAWEI’s ecosystem for productivity, communication, entertainment, education, and lifestyle needs. The company is also highlighting after-sales support through HUAWEI Authorized Service Centers in various Indonesian cities, along with customer consultation and official warranty coverage.
Alongside the MatePad Mini, HUAWEI is running a Back to School program with discounts of up to 42% on selected products. The company also says the first 20 buyers each day can receive a HUAWEI FreeBuds SE 3 unit for free while stocks last.
With its slim body, lightweight build, Flexible OLED PaperMatte Display, and broad app support, the MatePad Mini is being positioned as a premium mini tablet for people who want one device for study, work, creativity, and entertainment.
