Pixel’s Wallpaper Shuffle Leak Hints at Google’s Next iPhone-Style Move

Author: Qoo Media

Google’s latest Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5 build for select Pixel devices has exposed a feature that could change how wallpapers work on Pixel phones. The clearest clue is a new Photo Shuffle option that appears to borrow the same idea seen on iPhone, where a wallpaper can rotate automatically from a chosen set of photos.

If the feature reaches a wider release, Pixel users may be able to build a dedicated album of favorite images and let the system refresh the wallpaper on its own. The setup points to a more personal approach, with Google appearing to encourage collections centered on people and pets rather than generic photo libraries.

What the beta has revealed

Android Authority reported the discovery after an APK teardown of Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5. The interface shown in the build places Photo Shuffle in a separate window and includes the line, “Create an album of your favourite people and pets to auto-refresh your wallpaper”.

That wording suggests the feature is designed for curated photo sets, not just random background rotation. It also indicates that users may be able to create a new album specifically for the feature or choose an existing album as the source.

Visible options in the beta Details
On Tap Wallpaper changes manually when tapped
Hourly Wallpaper refreshes every hour
Daily Wallpaper refreshes once per day
Sunset/Sunrise Wallpaper changes based on day and night transitions

A more integrated wallpaper system

The leaked flow also shows where the feature may live in Android’s settings. Users are expected to open Settings, go to Wallpaper & style, tap More wallpapers, and then select a Collection.

That path suggests Google is building Photo Shuffle into the existing wallpaper personalization system rather than treating it as a separate app or tool. The approach would make the feature feel like a natural extension of Android’s current customization options.

QPR1 Beta 5 focuses on fixes too

Beyond the wallpaper clues, Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5 is also a maintenance release for Pixel devices. Google began rolling it out on June 23, and the update addresses several issues reported in earlier beta builds.

Among the fixes is a Game Dashboard bug that previously prevented users from stopping screen recordings or saving the recorded file. Google also fixed a problem that could cause the Camera app to freeze.

Additional issues tied to Always-On Display and Download Manager were also addressed in the release. Those changes make the beta more than a feature test, since it is also working to improve overall stability.

Still unannounced by Google

Photo Shuffle has not been officially announced as a final Android 17 feature, and the current evidence comes only from code and interface elements inside the beta build. As with many pre-release discoveries, the design and naming could still change before a wider launch.

Even so, the appearance of the feature name, description, menu path, and scheduling options suggests development is fairly advanced. For Pixel users, it would add another layer of personalization if Google decides to ship it in a public build.

The focus on wallpapers also shows that Google continues to treat customization as an important part of the Android experience. With QPR1 Beta 5 now in testing, attention is on whether Photo Shuffle will return in a later build with a clearer public rollout.
