Oppo Brings Back Open-Ear TWS Design, but ANC Has to Do the Heavy Lifting

Oppo has returned to an open-ear earbud design with the Enco Air 5s, betting that comfort will matter as much as sound control. The new TWS drops silicone ear tips entirely, giving it a lighter fit that will look familiar to users who liked AirPods-style earbuds.

That design choice is a clear shift from the Enco Air 4, which moved to an in-ear format with a tighter seal. Oppo is now offering two different approaches again, with the Enco Air 5s aimed at users who prioritize long-wear comfort over stronger passive isolation.

Comfort first, but with a trade-off

An open-ear design means the entire part that enters the ear is made of plastic, without a rubber tip. In daily use, that usually feels less intrusive and more breathable, but outside noise can also enter more easily than with in-ear earbuds.

To offset that weakness, Oppo equips the Enco Air 5s with Real-time Adaptive Noise Cancellation. The system is designed to adjust automatically based on how the earbuds are worn, the shape of the ear canal, and the surrounding environment.

Oppo also adds a Tailored Voice-Cancelling System, which is meant to reduce human conversation more effectively. That makes the Enco Air 5s a more ambitious open-ear model than a typical passive-comfort TWS.

Audio, controls, and connectivity

The Enco Air 5s uses a 12 mm dynamic driver with a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Sound tuning can also be adjusted through a 10-band equalizer inside the HeyMelody app.

For wireless use, Oppo includes Bluetooth 6.0 and Dual Connection, allowing the earbuds to stay paired with two devices at once. The earbuds also support swipe controls for volume and access to a digital assistant.

Additional features include Spotify access and AI Translate for real-time translation. Oppo also rates the Enco Air 5s with IP55 protection, which covers dust resistance and protection from water splashes for everyday use.

Battery life and charging case capacity

Each earbud carries a 40.5 mAh battery, which Oppo says can last up to 9 hours with ANC off or around 4.5 hours with ANC on. Combined with the 530 mAh charging case, total playback is claimed to reach 48 hours without ANC.

With noise cancellation enabled, total battery life is said to be 25 hours. Oppo also says the battery is TÜV Rheinland certified and designed to withstand up to 1,000 charging cycles.

Enco Air 5 offers the sealed alternative

Alongside the Enco Air 5s, Oppo has also introduced the Enco Air 5, which keeps the in-ear design with silicone ear tips. It is positioned for users who want stronger noise isolation and more direct ANC performance.

Oppo says the Enco Air 5 can reduce noise by up to 52 dB at frequencies up to 5,000 Hz. The model weighs 4.3 grams per earbud and uses a 62 mAh battery for up to 13 hours of playback without ANC or 6.5 hours with ANC on.

With the 530 mAh charging case, Oppo claims up to 54 hours of total use without ANC and 27 hours with ANC. The Enco Air 5 also comes with Bluetooth 6.1, multipoint connectivity, low-latency mode up to 47 ms, Oppo Alive Audio spatial audio, a 12 mm driver, and IP55 certification.

Price and availability

The Enco Air 5s comes in Lunar White, Midnight Black, and Starlight Purple, and is priced at S$120 in Singapore. The Enco Air 5 is available in Glossy White and Midnight Black, with a Singapore price of S$110.

Oppo has not yet announced when either model will be launched in Indonesia. For now, local availability remains unconfirmed.
