Apple’s next base iPhone may deliver a smaller memory jump than many expected. Instead of moving to 12GB RAM, the standard iPhone 18 is now said to be heading for 9GB, a shift that could reshape expectations for Apple’s on-device AI strategy.
The detail matters because memory remains one of the biggest factors behind generative features that run locally on a phone. For Apple, the reported choice suggests a balancing act between AI capability, performance, and production costs.
A more modest memory upgrade
According to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the regular iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are both expected to use 9GB of DRAM. Kuo said the iPhone 18e is likely to arrive around March or April 2027.
That would still be an upgrade from the current base iPhone 17, which is said to carry 8GB of RAM. In other words, Apple would still be raising the baseline, but not by as much as some earlier rumors suggested.

Beyond memory, attention is also on the A20 chip expected to power the regular iPhone 18. The chip is rumored to move to TSMC’s 2nm process, which would mark a major step forward in Apple’s silicon roadmap.
Based on the circulating claims, A20 could deliver around 15 percent better CPU performance and up to 30 percent better power efficiency than the A19 series. If those numbers hold, users may see faster responsiveness and longer battery life at the same time.

The premium side of the lineup is still expected to stay ahead. iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable phone, likely to be called iPhone Ultra, are said to keep 12GB RAM and use the A20 Pro chip.
Both devices are reportedly scheduled for the fall 2026 launch window. If that timeline holds, memory capacity will remain one of the clearest dividing lines between standard and premium iPhones.
That strategy fits Apple’s long-running pattern of separating base and Pro models by more than just camera hardware or display design. Users who want the highest-end AI and performance capabilities would still be nudged toward the pricier tier.
