CHUWI UniBook AI Challenges Premium Laptops, Smart AI at a Far Lower Price

CHUWI has opened pre-orders for the UniBook AI, its first AI laptop designed to run artificial intelligence locally without depending on internet access or cloud services. That positioning makes it stand out immediately in a market where most AI laptops still sit in premium territory.

The most striking part is the price. The standard UniBook AI starts at $499, or around Rp7.6 million, while the launch promo lowers it to $449, or around Rp6.8 million. By comparison, AI laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS are generally sold above $1,000.

Local AI performance without the premium label

At the center of the machine is the Intel Core 3 304 “Wildcat Lake,” a newly released processor paired with an integrated Neural Processing Unit. CHUWI says the NPU can reach up to 15 TOPS in Int8, which exceeds Microsoft’s 10 TOPS minimum for Copilot+ PC devices, even though this model does not carry the Copilot+ branding.

That hardware allows the laptop to handle AI tasks directly on the device. The supported functions include smart writing assistance, real-time voice transcription, simple image generation, and audio and video enhancement.

The local approach brings two practical advantages. Data stays on the device for better privacy, and AI responses can be faster because they do not depend on network latency.

Key AI Platform Details Specification
Processor Intel Core 3 304 “Wildcat Lake”
NPU Performance Up to 15 TOPS Int8
Windows AI Threshold Above Microsoft Copilot+ PC minimum of 10 TOPS
AI Use Cases Writing help, transcription, image generation, audio and video enhancement

Specifications that remain practical for everyday use

UniBook AI runs Windows 11 Pro and comes with 8GB LPDDR5 6400 MT/s memory. Storage is handled by a 256GB PCIe 3.0 SSD, and the capacity can still be expanded later.

The laptop uses a 14-inch WUXGA 1920×1200 IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 100% sRGB coverage, and 300 nits of brightness. That layout gives users more vertical space for writing, coding, and browsing.

Power comes from a 53.38Wh battery that is claimed to last up to 13 hours for local video playback. Charging uses 65W USB-C Power Delivery, while the device itself weighs 1.2 kg and measures 314.5 × 221 × 16.4 mm.

Core Hardware Specification Benefit
Memory 8GB LPDDR5 6400 MT/s Suitable for general productivity
Storage 256GB PCIe 3.0 SSD Expandable storage support
Display 14-inch WUXGA IPS, 16:10, 100% sRGB, 300 nits More vertical workspace
Battery 53.38Wh Up to 13 hours of local video playback

Ports are one of its strongest advantages

One of the UniBook AI’s biggest selling points is its unusually complete port selection for a thin laptop. CHUWI includes 2 full-feature USB-C ports, 3 USB-A ports, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, a TF card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Gigabit Ethernet is still rare on slim laptops, but it is useful for stable connections during remote work or any task that needs more consistent networking. The three USB-A ports also make it easier to connect a mouse, flash drive, and other accessories without using a dongle.

The pair of USB-C ports adds flexibility for charging and docking, while the TF card slot is convenient for users who regularly transfer files from cameras or other media devices.

Built for portability rather than flash

The laptop uses a slim metal body and a 180-degree hinge. That design lets the display lie flat, which can help in small meetings, classroom collaboration, or informal presentations.

With its light weight and restrained design, the UniBook AI is aimed at users who want an easy-to-carry daily laptop. CHUWI appears to be prioritizing function over a minimalist look that sacrifices connectors.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

The UniBook AI appears best suited for students, teachers, freelancers, UMKM users, and home users who want to try local AI at a lower cost. Windows 11 Pro and the full port selection also make it relevant for operational work and presentations.

It is not positioned as a machine for heavy gaming or professional video editing. Graphics still rely on standard Intel Graphics, so its visual performance does not match that of higher-end laptops.

CHUWI is also running the “AI for Everyone, The Tournament for All” campaign, which offers discounts on other products including the CHUWI CoreBook Air, AuBox X Copilot+ PC, and Hi10 Max 2-in-1. With a starting price below $500, the UniBook AI is one of the clearest attempts to push AI laptops into a much wider market.
