WhatsApp is moving toward a more private way to start conversations, and the biggest shift is simple: users will soon be able to receive messages without sharing their phone numbers.
The change centers on usernames, a feature that is being introduced gradually and is expected to arrive by the end of 2026. Even before the full rollout, users can already reserve a preferred username in the latest version of the app.
Privacy takes center stage
For years, a phone number has been the key identifier on WhatsApp. That setup works, but it also exposes personal contact details in situations where people may not want them shared.
Username-based messaging changes that dynamic. Instead of handing out a number, a user can share a unique username that others can use to start a chat.
WhatsApp will not offer a public username directory, which means accounts will not be searchable at random. That design is meant to reduce unwanted contact while keeping communication easy to manage.

How reservation works now
Users who want to secure a name need the latest WhatsApp app version. From there, the reservation process starts in the account settings menu.
The path is straightforward: open Settings, choose Account, then go to Username or Name Username. After entering the desired name, WhatsApp will let the user save it if it is available.
If the chosen name is already taken, the app will ask for a different one. WhatsApp also provides a username generator that suggests available alternatives.
The feature remains optional, so WhatsApp can still be used in the usual way with a phone number alone. For many users, though, reserving a username now may be a practical move before the wider rollout arrives.
An extra safeguard for higher control
WhatsApp is also adding a username lock, a separate security layer that requires a four-digit code before someone can message or add an account to a group through a username.
That feature gives users more control over who can reach them, especially if they want to limit contact from unfamiliar people. Combined with usernames, it offers a more private setup without removing the convenience of quick messaging.
