Bali is set to host one of the internet’s most important global gatherings when ICANN87 Annual General Meeting takes place on 17–22 October 2026. The event is being positioned as a major opportunity for Indonesia to show that it is not only hosting the forum, but also taking a more active role in global internet governance.
The support behind the meeting became public during an audience in Jakarta on Friday, 3 July 2026, when Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria met with the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager (PANDI) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The meeting signaled that the government sees the event as more than a formal international agenda.
Government backing and multi-party coordination
Nezar Patria said the invitation for the Minister of Communication and Digital to attend and open ICANN87 would be forwarded for further attention. That step underlined how the meeting depends on coordination across institutions, not just on event logistics alone.
The audience also brought together ICANN Asia Pacific representatives and PANDI leadership, including Samiran Gupta, Vice President Stakeholder Engagement & Managing Director Asia Pacific ICANN, and Isnawan, Chair of the PANDI Board. According to Isnawan, Komdigi’s support as local host is important to ensure the forum runs smoothly and strengthens Indonesia’s position in the global internet ecosystem.
More than an event, a test of digital governance
Beyond preparations for delegates, the discussion also touched on one of the more persistent challenges in Indonesia’s digital space: domain abuse. The issue includes misuse tied to illegal content such as online gambling, making the topic directly relevant to the broader goal of building a safer internet environment.
PANDI has already been operating the Indonesia Domain Abuse Data Exchange, or IDADX, to monitor, analyze, and organize responses to domain abuse in a more structured and integrated way. The system was part of the conversation because a global forum of this scale also draws attention to how countries manage trust, safety, and accountability online.
Samiran Gupta welcomed the warm reception from the Indonesian government and the support given during preparation for ICANN87. The meeting also covered practical cross-sector issues, including coordination on customs permits and immigration matters for incoming international delegates.
