BSNL has added a satellite phone built around Inmarsat connectivity, aiming at users who cannot rely on ordinary mobile networks. The device is positioned for moments when communication must continue even in remote or difficult conditions.
The handset is not meant for mainstream buyers, but for specialized use cases where coverage gaps can become operational risks. Defense, maritime work, disaster response, mining, remote operations, and adventure travel are among the scenarios BSNL says the phone is designed to serve.
Built for harsh environments
BSNL says the satellite phone supports voice calls and SMS through satellite links. It also includes SOS emergency support, a rugged build, and a long-lasting battery for demanding environments.
The company has highlighted “crystal clear voice calling” as part of the device’s appeal, alongside its emergency communication features. The emphasis suggests that the phone is meant to be practical first, rather than feature-rich in the usual smartphone sense.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Connectivity | Inmarsat |
| Services | Voice calls and SMS via satellite |
| Emergency feature | SOS emergency support |
| Design | Rugged build |
| Battery | Long-lasting battery |
Price places it firmly in a niche category
BSNL has priced the Satellite Phone at Rs. 1,34,166, with taxes included, according to its announcement on X. Anyone seeking more details has been directed to the nearest BSNL office or a dedicated helpline.
That price makes clear that this is not a mass-market communication device. It is a specialist tool for people and organizations that need a backup when conventional networks are unavailable.
BSNL already had a satellite service in place
PTI reported that BSNL has been offering its Global Satellite Phone Service to the public and private companies since 1 January 2018. The service requires customer verification similar to a cellular connection, along with details on location, duration, and intended use.
PTI also said the communications are encrypted, and that BSNL offers prepaid and postpaid satellite plans for government and commercial users. Reported postpaid packages were listed at Rs. 3,500, Rs. 5,835, and Rs. 11,670 per month.
For prepaid users, the reported starting price is Rs. 3,500 per month for government users and Rs. 5,835 per month for commercial customers. Top-up vouchers are also available in denominations ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 10,000.
With the new handset now joining an established satellite service, BSNL is reinforcing its role in a communications segment that remains outside the reach of most operators. The offering is clearly aimed at users who need connectivity to hold up when conventional networks do not.
