HMD Fusion 2 May Keep Modular Phones Alive With a More Practical Design

HMD is reportedly keeping the Fusion 2 project alive despite earlier concerns over development costs and profitability. The device could give modular smartphones another chance by focusing on practical accessories and easier repairability rather than expensive add-on hardware.

The report comes from X tipster @smashx_60, who cited reliable sources. HMD Fusion 2 is said to remain in active development with a different design and a revised approach to modularity.

Specific details about the new accessory system have not been disclosed. However, the changes could make the modular experience smarter, easier to use, or more accessible than the first-generation model.

A More Substantial Hardware Upgrade

Leaked specifications suggest that HMD Fusion 2 could receive notable upgrades in display quality and performance. It is said to feature a 6.58-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset.

Those specifications would represent a clear step up from the original HMD Fusion. The 2024 model used a 6.56-inch HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor.

The Fusion 2 is also rumored to add an 8MP ultrawide camera. Its dust and water resistance may improve to an IP65 rating, while support for second-generation outfits and 3D-printed accessories is also being discussed.

Why the Original Fusion Stood Apart

HMD introduced the first Fusion in 2024 with a system called Smart Outfits. These replaceable accessories could add protection to the phone or provide a grip intended for gaming.

The concept positioned the device differently from earlier modular phone efforts. Instead of prioritising high-cost modules, HMD combined functional accessories with a focus on repairability.

That strategy could remain central to the next model if the current information proves accurate. A simpler accessory ecosystem may be more useful to buyers than a broad collection of costly modules with limited everyday value.

XR22 and Skyline 2 Remain in the Picture

HMD is reportedly developing HMD XR22 as the successor to the XR21. Surabaya Inside reported that the XR21 was known for IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H certifications, alongside solid performance and reliable cameras for its rugged-phone class.

Technical details for the XR22 have not yet emerged. It is nevertheless expected to retain the durable character of its predecessor while improving performance and camera capabilities.

The same source also rejected reports of a Skyline 2 GT and a Skyline 2 version with a circular camera module. The regular HMD Skyline 2 is instead said to be progressing with more conventional upgrades.

Those rumored upgrades include a brighter 144Hz OLED display, Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, a 108MP main camera, two 50MP cameras, and Qi2 wireless charging. As with Fusion 2, the specifications, design, and product positioning may change before any official announcement.

HMD’s reported product plans point to three distinct directions: modularity with Fusion 2, physical durability with XR22, and higher-end updates with Skyline 2. Among them, Fusion 2 stands out because its success may depend less on raw specifications than on whether its accessories become genuinely practical.
