The opportunity comes with a potential pricing challenge. Leaked information suggests the iPhone 18 Pro Max could cost more than US$300 above the previous generation.
China’s smartphone market has been facing rising component costs, particularly for memory. Apple has not officially raised its product prices in the country, but it has reportedly reduced promotions and discounts.
A substantial price increase would place more pressure on Apple to show practical benefits from its AI tools. A complete Apple Intelligence experience could become a key reason for buyers to consider the higher-priced model.
A China-Specific AI Framework
China’s Cyberspace Administration, or CAC, is said to have approved Apple’s AI system for operation in the country. If the plan proceeds, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra could become the first iPhones in China to offer fully integrated Apple Intelligence from the start of sales.
Apple Intelligence was introduced in 2024 but has not been available in China because AI services must pass local regulatory reviews. Apple is reportedly building a dedicated local ecosystem rather than relying on AI models from Google or OpenAI.

Those improvements would be meaningful, but may not alone create a major reason for owners of recent iPhones to upgrade. Expanded AI capabilities through iOS 27 could change that calculation.
iOS 27 is expected to bring additional AI functions, including a smarter Siri and better context processing. The update may also include content creation tools and more efficient work support.
Apple Intelligence has been seen as moving more slowly than its original promise, with available features not yet creating a wide gap over rival mobile AI offerings. A more complete rollout in China could give the platform a more consequential test.
Apple Faces a Competitive Market
Apple’s position in China has shown signs of recovery after pressure from Huawei, Xiaomi, and vivo. The fourth quarter of 2025 was described as Apple’s strongest business period in the country since 2021, driven largely by iPhone 17 sales.
IDC identified Apple as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in the second quarter despite a broader market slowdown. Counterpoint Research took a more cautious view, saying Huawei was the only brand with positive growth, though both firms placed Apple as China’s second-largest smartphone maker.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max will therefore face a demanding balance between AI usefulness, premium pricing, and intense competition. Its prospects in the China smartphone market will depend on whether Apple can make its AI features genuinely useful to consumers.
