Alan Dye, the former Vice President of Human Interface Design at Apple, has officially joined Meta. He will report directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth and oversee artificial intelligence (AI) product development.
According to Bloomberg, Dye has been appointed as the head of Meta’s newest design studio. His responsibilities include supervising the design of both hardware and software products.
A New Design Studio at Meta
This new studio brings together a team of top design talents, including former Apple designer Billy Sorrentino. It also features Meta’s interface design lead Joshua To, industrial design head Pete Bristol, and metaverse design and art team leader Jason Rubin. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed this setup on his Threads account.
Zuckerberg stated, “This studio will unite design, fashion, and technology to define the next generation of our products and experiences.” He added that Meta aims “to treat intelligence as a new design material and imagine what is possible when intelligence is abundant, capable, and human-centered.”
Alan Dye’s Impact at Apple
Before joining Meta, Dye played a critical role in shaping Apple’s product interface and user experience. He took on increasing responsibilities after Jony Ive’s departure in 2019. Dye was the mastermind behind the visionOS interface and the innovative Liquid Glass design language.
He has now been succeeded by Stephen Lemay, a senior Apple designer who has contributed to Apple’s interface designs since 1999.
Meta’s Hardware Ambitions
Meta’s hardware lineup has seen success with products like the Quest virtual reality headset and the Ray-Ban smart glasses. Alan Dye’s recruitment signals Meta’s intent to accelerate its consumer hardware development.
With Dye’s expertise and the new design studio’s combined talent, Meta aims to release more advanced and aesthetically compelling hardware products. This move could enhance Meta’s competitive edge in the evolving tech landscape.
