Despite numerous design leaks circulating online, Apple has yet to confirm the development of its first foldable smartphone. This silence leaves the market speculating about the potential features and release timing of the device.
Meanwhile, Samsung is quietly advancing its foldable phone lineup. A new model, reportedly named Samsung Wide Fold, is under preparation, aiming to distinguish itself from the current Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series. Industry insiders, cited by Korean media Etnews, have disclosed that this device will feature a wider form factor, diverging from the typically slim and elongated designs seen in Samsung’s existing foldables.
The Wide Fold is expected to sport a main screen size of 7.6 inches when unfolded, accompanied by an outer display of 5.4 inches. These dimensions closely resemble the rumored screen sizes of the foldable iPhone, which is said to have a 7.76-inch inner display and a 5.49-inch cover screen. Such parallels have fueled speculation that Samsung’s Wide Fold could be a strategic preemptive move to counter the anticipated Apple foldable.
The foldable iPhone is rumored to open into a landscape-oriented tablet-like screen, enhancing usability for multitasking and media consumption. Samsung’s Wide Fold adopts a 4:3 aspect ratio in its unfolded state, a departure from the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s more elongated 3:3.3 ratio. This design aims to provide a more natural tablet experience, favoring productivity tasks.
Samsung’s expertise in foldable technology positions the Wide Fold as an evolutionary step in the segment. The Fold 8 is expected to feature a substantial camera upgrade, including a 200 MP main sensor, a 12 MP telephoto lens, and a 50 MP ultrawide camera, significantly surpassing its predecessor’s camera specs. This could position the Fold 8’s camera system on par with the flagship Galaxy S series.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 may introduce noteworthy hardware improvements by featuring the Exynos 2600 chip built on a cutting-edge 2nm fabrication process. If confirmed, this would mark the first Z Flip model using an Exynos processor instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.
