Apple appears to be preparing one of the biggest shifts in its iPhone roadmap in years, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored iPhone Fold expected to lead the 2026 lineup. If the latest reports prove accurate, Apple will move away from its familiar four-model launch pattern and spread major iPhone releases across two seasons.
The change could reshape both Apple’s product strategy and buyer expectations. Instead of seeing every new iPhone at once, consumers may get a more staggered release cycle that puts the premium models first and pushes the entry-level phone to a later window.
Apple’s 2026 launch plan could look very different
Bloomberg reported that Apple is “shaking up” its annual release schedule, based on information from internal sources. Under the new setup, the standard iPhone model would not arrive alongside the Pro lineup, but in the following spring together with the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air.
That would create a notably crowded 12-month cycle. In total, Apple could launch as many as six iPhone models across one year, which would mark a rare expansion in the company’s usual release rhythm.
iPhone 18 Pro may bring a major chip upgrade
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to remain Apple’s core premium phones in the next launch cycle. Reports say both models could use the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, a move that would likely improve power efficiency and performance.
A shift to 2nm would matter beyond headline speed gains. It could also help Apple extend battery life and support more demanding on-device features, especially as AI processing becomes more central to smartphone competition.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also expected to keep its position as the most advanced model in Apple’s traditional lineup. Current reports still point to a triple rear-camera setup, which would preserve the Pro Max’s lead in photography and video hardware.
Color choices may change again
Apple may also continue its recent approach of limiting color options on the Pro series. According to the leak, a black finish may once again be absent from the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, similar to the iPhone 17 Pro family.
Another detail drawing attention is the possible disappearance of the “cosmic orange” finish. The report says Apple is likely to replace that color, although the new option has not been identified yet.
iPhone Fold could become Apple’s most expensive phone
The most closely watched device in the 2026 plan is the iPhone Fold, which some reports also call the iPhone Ultra. Apple has not confirmed the product, but the device is widely viewed as the company’s first foldable iPhone.
That positioning could place it above every current iPhone in price and exclusivity. Early leaks suggest a large folding display that could feel close in size to an early iPad mini when opened, which would make it Apple’s most distinctive phone design in years.

Launch timing remains under scrutiny
There has been ongoing debate about when the iPhone Fold will actually arrive. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously suggested that production complexity for a foldable display could delay the device beyond Apple’s usual September event.
More recent comments from Gurman, however, indicate the phone is “on track” for Apple’s normal iPhone launch period. That would place the iPhone Fold in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, if supply chain testing stays on schedule.
A separate leak from Weibo added momentum to that view by claiming the iPhone Fold has entered trial production at Foxconn. If that stage progresses smoothly, mass production could begin around July, close to the production timeline for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple’s reported 2026 lineup would therefore combine two major themes: a more flexible release calendar and a new foldable category that could redefine the company’s hardware image. If the current reports hold, the iPhone 18 Pro will anchor the familiar premium tier, while the iPhone Fold may steal the spotlight as the most unusual and expensive iPhone Apple has ever introduced.
