Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Ultra is being linked to a major storage upgrade, and the rumor has quickly drawn attention because of what it could mean for everyday speed and on-device AI. The key claim is straightforward: Samsung may equip the Ultra model with UFS 5.0, a newer storage standard associated with faster data access and stronger flagship-level performance.
The report comes from leaker Yeux1122 on Naver, who says Samsung is considering UFS 5.0 only for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. If accurate, that would leave the regular Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ on UFS 4.0, a split that would keep the top model in a more exclusive position within the lineup.
A premium feature reserved for the Ultra
This rumored approach would follow a pattern Samsung has used in recent generations. The Ultra tier is often treated as the most complete version of the series, and storage could become another point of separation.
That distinction matters because both the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra are still reported to rely on UFS 4.0. Moving the Ultra model to UFS 5.0 would therefore stand out as a more visible jump in the storage category, rather than a change shared across the whole family.
Why UFS 5.0 matters
UFS 5.0 is the latest storage standard introduced by JEDEC in October last year. It offers bandwidth of up to 10.8 Gbps, which is nearly twice the roughly 5.8 Gbps range associated with UFS 4.0 and UFS 4.1.
The improvement is not only about transferring large files faster. Faster storage access can also help mobile devices handle demanding tasks more efficiently, especially when data needs to be processed locally rather than relying on the cloud.
That is why the rumor has been tied closely to AI performance on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. As more smartphone features depend on on-device processing, storage speed becomes increasingly important in keeping those functions responsive.
AI support may be part of the bigger strategy
The storage upgrade is not the only performance-related change being discussed. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is also said to use a custom version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
Combined with UFS 5.0, that chipset would give Samsung more room to frame the Ultra as a device built for high-end gaming, advanced multitasking, and AI-heavy features. While there is still no official confirmation, the rumor aligns with how Samsung usually positions its flagship Ultra models.
Camera and productivity features are also in the mix
Performance is only one part of the broader picture. Leaks also mention a quad-camera setup led by a 200MP main sensor with a 1/1.12-inch size.
That sensor is said to support LOFIC, or Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor, a technology expected to improve dynamic range. In practical terms, that could help the phone capture more detail in both bright and dark areas, which remains one of the key benchmarks for flagship cameras.
The Galaxy S27 Ultra is also expected to keep the S Pen with a digitizer. That detail suggests Samsung is not planning to remove one of the Ultra line’s most practical features, preserving its appeal for users who want note-taking, sketching, and more precise input.
